When the Ethiopians attacked me (the Holy Roman Buddhist Empire), I had a cav win a fight against attacking infantry and some messenger ran 26 miles to tell about it. The people were so impressed it started a golden age for me. It was a lovely war.
Rule 37: "There is no 'overkill'. There is only 'open fire' and 'I need to reload'."

In my current game, I was tasked with putting together a carrier fleet. I don't remember the particulars, something like three carriers, four destroyers, two battleships, and nine fighters. I got to choose between the following rewards, +1 combat upgrade for all carriers, destroyers, battleships, and fighters; or +5c upgrade for harbors; or a permenant ban on nuclear weapons. I went for the gold.
I was tasked to build 9 Colosseums so that I could host a sports league... Considering I already had 8 built, it wasn't a problem. But who the heck came up with these... why would a sports league want an uneven number of teams
But I'm starting to get a little pissed off about "some" of the rewards I get for each quest. I wish they would tell you right up front what the rewards will be. Nothing worse than dropping everything you are doing to do some silly quest, and then finding out the rewards weren't worth it.

The quest rewards seem static, so once you've seen all the rewards for all the quests, you'll know if it's worth it or not when you get them.

Not for those of us with a bad memory. I just got a quest that I believe I've seen before, but I don't remember the reward
Ah, that's what is wrong with events: They don't have variable effects, randomly selected!
We NEED expanded event modules (either more events or more results from them). Eventually we will have seen them all, and we must delay that occurance.

Eventually, everything will be an event with random outcomes. Banks can be better or worse than expected, troops come with random promotions, land changes type before your eyes, seas rise and fall, and fishy type food resources migrate to new locations. I see it now; start a civ and then spend the whole game responding to events.
Maybe not quite that expanded, but more and more random would be fun.
(Incidentally, I've yet to see a volcano in over seven full games and a few fizzled starts.)

Today I got another nice one.
One of my economists came up with a new economic theory and I could choose wether I wanted -10% inflation or wanted to invest 476 gold and get -25% inflation (I was in the lucky situation to have the gold, so I invested and afterwards had to pay around 50 gold less on inflation per turn)

Blaupanzer, your fizzled starts were when a volcano with a 40-mile caldera erupted beneath your feet.

For people that play civ for the experience (and not just "to win"), this would be a much more realistic game than it is at present.

When everybody has gunpowder, you'll get tower shields, and all your infantry type troops will have the Cover promo.

What is a tower shield? Played this game since 1990, and I am still learning new things.

A very large shield. Going by memory, but I think that's what the random event says you discover or improve, hence the Cover promo.
