+25% really doesn't mean much against the possible +250%.
Hmmm, I guess the Forum would be another good choice of UB for a Philo/Indus civ.
My fantacy civ however really doesn't focus on GP. It simply allows you to generate them at a good rate early without sacrificing production via wonder whoring.
This is a great conversation and I have had the same one with myself from time to time. I do have a question for all of you though. Do you know the Traits, Units and UBs so well that this is an easy thought process or do you actually need to sit down with the game or with charts and figure this out? I play CIV quite a bit but I just don't have all of this memorized, particularly the unique bits of each UU and UB.

I'm not a great expert. My approach is to play a custom game with a random leader. It gives me a chance to meet a number of the UUs and UBs. After that, it's down to reading the documentation and trying it out.
Well yes, or even mechanised infantry ... but I think we should stick to units that are given to some civ at the start.

A somewhat arbitrary rule maybe. For me the decision is simple, if you want a scout you have to select Hunting as a starting tech (or get lucky with a hut). Anything else and you start with a warrior
Since the starting free unit is strictly determined by your starting techs, you cannot “choose” the unit you begin with. (Civ4 Reg 4.12(a)(iv) 2006)
