Yes Brutus, I figured I'd clarify It is possible to do proper stack attack (aka Dale's Combat Mod) via mods. Cyrus, if that's what you care about, look up Dale's combat mod.

I am eagerly awaiting a Civ MMO. I enjoy paying monthly for things, and the idea of talking to real people pretending to be immortal world leaders appeals to me of late.

FYI, Dale's Combat Mod isn't Warlords 2.08 compatible. Vanilla 1.61 compatible it is, however.

Massive Multiplayer Online (typically followed by RPG, role playing game). i.e. your world of warcrafts and everquests.

Civ MMO would be interesting, i don't think it could be anything like civ though.

RTS battles would really suck in a game like Civ. Not only would it take 100+ hours just to get to the medieval age, it'll also give an unfair advantage to the human player

M2TW: Kingdoms is supposed to fix this problem. Or at least try to.

I think they all have made that claim.

Shogun was still the best of the series anyway. Simple design every unit had a clear counter.

MTW just muddied the water by making multiples of each unit. 30 different light cavalry or archers, or whatnot serve no real use as far as the battles are concerned.

Rome got WAY too arcade. Look ma, I can charge the enemy flanks and they instantly route and my arrows slay men by the hundreds.

I've seen nothing to make me believe M2 is any better.

You want to try A Tale in the Desert. Pretty much immortal, no combat, building-oriented. You start a peon and you're part of building a civilization

I enjoyed RTW, but it is what it is - it's not a Civ game. I don't think Civ would benefit from RTS combat, and it goes against their whole design philosophy, "make one good game, not two great games." The Total War games are RTS games with a TBS superstructure thrown on as a mechanism to arrive at the RTS battles; that's CA's whole philosophy. Civ has its emphasis on the TBS part, and I wouldn't want to dilute that by having them add a foray into RTS gaming.

Civ could use the same battle system as Sid Meiers Pirates! I guess.. with a seperate battle map (also turn based)
Similar to the battle map in Heros of Might and Magic

It's not bad, the battles only take a long time if the AI is too stupid to move(which happens in many cases). There are situations where the AI waits for your army to advance. With gunpowder units like mortars, you don't need to advance in order to kill the units, so you can really rip the AI to pieces and they will sit there re-forming and moving around in the same place without advancing until they are dead.

I've come to like Medieval 2: Total War, but I really wish they had random maps and such. I also don't like being limited on time(the number of turns is a bit low compared to a Civ 4 Marathon game).

A problem with M2TW as well as Civ 4 is not giving enough credit to certain units. You take a cannon unit and it will rip through most other units, but the AI calculation on the strength of that unit really doesn't give it enough strength. A part of this is that you need to calculate that other units will defend them while a proper AI will target these dangerous units.
