I think they all have made that claim.
Shogun was still the best of the series anyway. Simple design every unit had a clear counter.
MTW just muddied the water by making multiples of each unit. 30 different light cavalry or archers, or whatnot serve no real use as far as the battles are concerned.
Rome got WAY too arcade. Look ma, I can charge the enemy flanks and they instantly route and my arrows slay men by the hundreds.

I enjoyed RTW, but it is what it is - it's not a Civ game. I don't think Civ would benefit from RTS combat, and it goes against their whole design philosophy, "make one good game, not two great games." The Total War games are RTS games with a TBS superstructure thrown on as a mechanism to arrive at the RTS battles; that's CA's whole philosophy. Civ has its emphasis on the TBS part, and I wouldn't want to dilute that by having them add a foray into RTS gaming.Lime roots and treachery!

I've come to like Medieval 2: Total War, but I really wish they had random maps and such. I also don't like being limited on time(the number of turns is a bit low compared to a Civ 4 Marathon game).
A problem with M2TW as well as Civ 4 is not giving enough credit to certain units. You take a cannon unit and it will rip through most other units, but the AI calculation on the strength of that unit really doesn't give it enough strength. A part of this is that you need to calculate that other units will defend them while a proper AI will target these dangerous units.
