So that if you ever have a system/hard drive failure you lose every game you own? Or maybe have some virus come along and corrupt it? I prefer my games on something that won't be damaged or inadvertantly altered, given a reasonable amount of care.
An accessory to a downloadable game would have to be the creation of a backup disc -- complete with copy protection to prevent you-know-what. But who would want to download a 5-600MB game without a fast broadband?
If you have even the slighest bit of organizational skill, there's absolutely no reason to lose any disc.
If you upgrade your machine and replace the CD/DVD drive, it's possible you will leave the CD in the drive when you pull it out of the case. It happened to me and I was wondering where the CD went(because I never lose CDs). 9 months later as I went through some old parts I came across the CD drive(it was a Plextor SCSI drive), and for the hell of it, I checked. Yep, that's where the CD had gone to.

I have always figured that if we don't need to pay for the media, the software should cost less money. Package and media, plus documentation should always cost money, and if they don't provide these things, we should get a break on price.

Sorry, but that's not part of my definition of organizational skill. That's just plain carelessness IMO. Besides, how often does anyone replace their drives?

I haven't received any documentation with a PC game for some time. Unless you call a booklet that tells you little more than how to install the game "documentation".
In other words, I think we're already getting the "break" on price.

Now now, 2k Man, Vanilla's manual was +200 pages.
Then again, I bought the LE, not sure what came with the standard.
The documentation was 16 pages. The manual on the disk may have been 200 pages, but that costs nothing to send out (compared with a 200 page printed manual).
