Random events in a TBS are always bad, be it Civ1, CtP2, Civ4 or chess (ever thought of that?)
But there are already a lot of random events in civ. Your starting position, your neighbours, whether someone decides to declare war on you, whether someone decides to research meditation in 4000 bc, whether someone starts building the same wonder as you, goody hut techs...
And you really can't compare civ to a completely transparent game like chess.
Let your every day be full of joy, love the child that holds your hand, let your wife delight in your embrace, for these alone are the concerns of humanity.
The BtS Pitboss Team Democracy Game has just started!!!
Come and test your metal in theApolyton Civ4 Beyond the Sword Tri-League Tournament
Tohunga o kairākau of Southern Cross in the Warlords Pitboss Team Democracy Game, and Member of the Great Council and Curator of The Khan's Compendium for The Horde in the Civ4 Team Democracy Game
And it's the middle of winter here when it comes out - no reason to go outside!
Corporation sounds kinda cool too........
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
You guys and your wild speculation are getting me all excited.
Sweet about the return of Hammurabi - I have great memories of games with cities in every part of the world from Civ 1, as that civ. Yay too for the return of random events ( although I do hope they give you the option of switching them off). I remember having to build Temples to stave off volcanic eruptions...
I've never been too interested in the game once RRs hit the scene, ANY iteration of Civ. Hopefully this will all change with the new emphasis. I'll be stuck at work this summer looking after a host of new students. Guess what I'll be doing on my laptop whilst they slave away in the lab for me?
Expanded epic game - New technologies are welcome, but I'm skeptical of new units and buildings and how useful they will actually be.
New game scenarios: Meh. Civ2 will always remain King of Scenarios in my book, and I haven't encountered any to convince me otherwise.
New civs: Meh. We have enough civs as it is, and already there is a problem in differentiating them all.
More leaders: Makes the problem worse.
Corporations: It isn't quite the corporation-freemarket-nonstatist economy that I'd like, but the "create your own religion" aspect has some appeal, I suppose. It really depends on the exact mechanisms.
Espionage: I wasn't displeased with the Civ2 system, Civ3 was annoying, but Civ4 made spies almost entirely irrelevant. I welcome anything to expand this.
New wonders: Meh.
Expanded Space Victory: Civ2 style, perhaps? This is definitely welcome.
Apostolic Palace: I don't really like how the UN has been introduced, so this won't really make much difference in how I play.
Advanced Starts: Okay.
Enhanced AI: Great.
Overall though I'd much rather see more significant additions to the game: Perhaps expanding the civics system (perhaps introducing an actual SE table a-la SMACX) or introducing a legal system or changing the way economy works or whatnot....Something that does alter the strategy or at least expand it on a much greater level. Many of these additions are nice, but it seems kind of "safe" - nothing really in here for me to be excited about.
As long as they fail to stop the overpoweredness (the root causes of it are the stlye of the ai and abusing slavery) of the early rush comptive games are still pointless. This will be good for SP non-comptive variant land though. I still sometimes play there.

The starting position (including your neighbors) are not events but the setup of every game. There are chess variants with a different starting position also (google Fischer Random).
Goody huts are random events indeed, but as such can be disabled.
All other examples are not events at all but a decisions within the rules of the game. They can contain randomness to some small extend if AI is involved, but generally reflect the situation on the board, just like a chess computer generating his turn. In a multiplayer environment they're not random at all.
Events as described for BTS have a large impact on the game and are completely random, drawn from thin air. You can hardly prevent them if you are playing smart, which makes them unfun.
I'm not opposing them completely, who wants them can have them, but I want to be able to disable them.

events are hardly described so far and I don't think that we can draw ANY conclusions from the description we got so far. we don't know what kind of events will happen, not what their impact is, not their nature and not even their cause. In fact we just only know that events will happen at a random base.
