That seems a bit far out for just an expansion.

Frankly, I don't expect anything earth shattering either. Mainly just some updates (graphics, AI, combat) and tweaks.
They also said that "2008" begins in this November. That makes a Christmas release possible (even probable). And, it's not too far out for an expansion for Civ4.

Though I think XP2 will still be released sometime this year.

What has more value: idle speculation on the x-pack or just waiting for real news on it?

My guess is XP3. The article talked about a 2008 release date, and I would expect XP2 to be out much sooner than that (probably July-August) and I don't expect a Civ V to be released so soon.

Well it's not as if they are mutually exclusive.

I agree Doctor, that "idle speculation on the x-pack" is not mutually exclusive of "waiting for real news on it."

Unfortunately, I added the word "just".

See, now I am idling. In this thread. But I am not speculating on the XP, 'cause I know it will be available when it is available, and will have the features it will have.

I haven't even played the expansion yet. Far too soon.

Great, they're losing money, and Civ4 XP may suffer. It's C3C all over again.
I liked C3C- even if they did break some stuff.

I liked that they tried to innovate some good new ideas, and introduce stuff to the series that had never been seen before. What I didn't like was the implementation -- breaking the game in the process wasn't worth the new stuff.

Hopefully they've learned their lesson, and XP2 will be far, far better (maybe even in a Sidney Carton kind of way ).

Developing a all new game takes huge ammount of time.
