  • The War I didn't want.

Did you ever have to fight a war that makes you a backstabber? I didn't want a war with Brennus, but I didn't have much of a choice. He was right next to me, at my southern border, and one of my biggest fears is usually that I won't have possession of a vital resource late in the game. Well, that happened....I was enjoying a moderate tech lead when I saw I had no uranium. But two of the border cities belonging to Brennus had it in the tile right next to them!

I used my scout to look at the cities....one was lightly defended, the other had 16 units in it! Mostly catapults and longbowmen, but in a few turns I saw that Brennus was upgrading to riflemen. If I was gonna take those cities I had to do it rather quickly. Actually, the lightly defended one would do, I only wanted the uranium, but I figured if I took both it would cripple Brennus ability to counterattack. I hated declaring war on him since we'd been on good terms the entire game thus far, but the heck with it. I moved in and took both cities. Brennus seemed to have a lot of catapults and he threw them against me and lost them when I sent out cavalry to destroy them. He wasted so many units in his counterattack that he left a nearby city lightly protected so I took it too. Then we had peace. But the uranium was still on his side of the borders!!! Rats! I waited a few turns since I needed to see if the borders would expand. The smaller city I took did , but only one tile! Luckily it had the uranium in it. But one of the other cities had a revolt and I was afraid it would flip back. I then decided to take another city from Brennus to diminish his borders and perhaps make him capitulate. I declared war again and started kicking his butt with Navy seals, but he then became a vassal of Ragnar! Now Ragnar is at war with me too!

Now I'm not afraid of Ragnar, he's far enough away that I can rally a good welcome for any troops he sends. But I didn't want to fight this war. Its only going to slow me down going for a spaceship win. All of this for uranium....I should have made arrangements to have better Great Artist Generation....maybe I could have avoided this war if I could culture bomb instead of attack.

Did you really *need* the uranium? I don't think it's a pre-requisite on any spacejunk? And by the sounds of it, you're not really in a tight race.

Thats actually a good question. I just assumed that uranium was needed for a SS win. I dislike trading for Strategic Resources since they can be cut off at the AI's whim, or lost if another AI attacks the one supplying you with it. Most of my civIII and IV wars were because I needed a resource. At least in Civ IV the AI doesn't know where they are ahead of time.

These wars are the only ones I've been involved in during this entire game. Part of the reason for that is I have a pretty large military and I've upgraded them as time went by so they're modern. (There may be an archer or musketman still around somewhere but I scroll through my cities and update as many as I can afford every few turns.) Otherwise I'm sure Izzy would have attacked me a lot earlier. She's next to Brennus and she's been threatening me the entire game.

I wonder now that brennus is vassal to Ragnar....his vassalage is good if he doesn't lose too much territory, right? Well, he's only got three cities left that I can see. If he loses one or 2 of those would he be free of Ragnar? I'm only guessing, but if that happens I can make him capitulate to me and then make peace with Ragnar....because I'm fairly certain Ragnar doesn't particularly want to fight me. I'm far away so he's gotta haul troops way over here, and I'm fed up with this monkey business so I'll throw everything I have at him and he oughtta know that. Its a losing situation for him. (I hope...if he gets anyone else to help him, I could be in trouble.)

Actually if the AI's could really "speak" to each other Brennus would do well to tell Ragnar not to do a lot to me. If he comes in force I'll start razing Celtic cities instead of bothering to have to man them with troops I can put in the field.

Under default settings, a city captured by force can't flip back to its former owner.

Really? I didn't know that. But it makes the revolt little more than a nuisance then.

Yeah, it's basically a nuisance. Two things to keep in mind: The city can still flip to another civ, and the military units in the city are damaged during any revolt, so it may become easy for the former city owner to take it back by force. (I'm not sure if a city in revolt also causes higher city maintenance costs throughout your empire.)

Well, I'm glad it didn't flip to either Izzy or the koreans....that would have enraged me to no end.

At first when I saw your reply i was a bit shocked, thinking you were in the US and its about 6 AM on the east Coast! But you're not very far from where I am if you're in Austria.

Uranium is mainly for nuclear plants if you have them. Aluminium is the key SS resource.

Well, there aren't too many Austrians who post in these forums, but I'm one of them.

I once saw the resource, coal, I needed on the other side of my border. I couldn't go to war since it was a vassal, and I couldn't demand it since they were to unadvanced to know it exsisted. I just culture bombed it.

It's rather silly, that i can still sell coal to someone, who cannot use it...

Don't fee bad about the war, it was necessary. Resources are important. Plus in denying uranium you keep them from nukes, which is good. and if he only has a couple f cities left,. take them all and then you don't have to worry about them anymore. It's much more simple. Having a vassal isn't as useful as before since you can't get all the gold in the world from them anymore.

As for his master. attack, attack, attack. If you don't want the cities, raze them. the war will end soon.

In one of my early games I had two really good allies on my borders, England and Indai...but they were in the way of the manifest destiny, so they had to go. I tried to be nice and just culture bomb one of their cities, and then they did it. anyway, in CIV IV wars happen because of resources.

I had a similar problem in my last game. I couldn't find aluminum anywhere except for a small island in the middle of nowhere. Until I realized that my friendly neighbourhood american neighbour had settled his cities on top of several aluminum sites. Man, he got it bad when I figured that one out
