Did you ever have to fight a war that makes you a backstabber? I didn't want a war with Brennus, but I didn't have much of a choice. He was right next to me, at my southern border, and one of my biggest fears is usually that I won't have possession of a vital resource late in the game. Well, that happened....I was enjoying a moderate tech lead when I saw I had no uranium. But two of the border cities belonging to Brennus had it in the tile right next to them!
I used my scout to look at the cities....one was lightly defended, the other had 16 units in it! Mostly catapults and longbowmen, but in a few turns I saw that Brennus was upgrading to riflemen. If I was gonna take those cities I had to do it rather quickly. Actually, the lightly defended one would do, I only wanted the uranium, but I figured if I took both it would cripple Brennus ability to counterattack. I hated declaring war on him since we'd been on good terms the entire game thus far, but the heck with it. I moved in and took both cities. Brennus seemed to have a lot of catapults and he threw them against me and lost them when I sent out cavalry to destroy them. He wasted so many units in his counterattack that he left a nearby city lightly protected so I took it too. Then we had peace. But the uranium was still on his side of the borders!!! Rats! I waited a few turns since I needed to see if the borders would expand. The smaller city I took did , but only one tile! Luckily it had the uranium in it. But one of the other cities had a revolt and I was afraid it would flip back. I then decided to take another city from Brennus to diminish his borders and perhaps make him capitulate. I declared war again and started kicking his butt with Navy seals, but he then became a vassal of Ragnar! Now Ragnar is at war with me too!
Now I'm not afraid of Ragnar, he's far enough away that I can rally a good welcome for any troops he sends. But I didn't want to fight this war. Its only going to slow me down going for a spaceship win. All of this for uranium....I should have made arrangements to have better Great Artist Generation....maybe I could have avoided this war if I could culture bomb instead of attack.

I dislike trading for Strategic Resources since they can be cut off at the AI's whim, or lost if another AI attacks the one supplying you with it. Most of my civIII and IV wars were because I needed a resource. At least in Civ IV the AI doesn't know where they are ahead of time.
