from a historical point of view, most of the city of rome's grain came on ships from egypt. shipping food around is not a new invention.

, your logic is severely flawed. First, food does not equal growth. Take a quick look at many African countries where population continues to skyrocket while food supply either decreases or only slightly increases. Second, BIG cities, do not produce lots of food, they consume it. The great plains in the US produces much of our food... that's why it's called the breadbasket.
