But it's a lot easier to win by conquest than it is to win diplomacy by being friends

Really? I don't know, maybe I am never aggressive enough, but I indeed win rarely through military means.

I have never managed to be friends with enough for a diplomacy victory to be possible (without using military force). The only times I've won by diplomacy, was after taking over most of the planet, giving me enough votes to win, even when everybody else votes against me... this feels like cheating, which is why I don't play with that victory on... it's not like the AI will ever get close at winning that way anyway, so turning it off will only make it more difficult for me

I never really had any problem winning by agression in either civ II or Alpha Centauri. But winning by agression in Civ IV is next to impossible since each city is so incredibly hard to take. I mean once a civ has archers you have to use about double the number of catapults that they have units plus other units.

As well the AI is good enough now to bring other units to protect its attackers so trying to kill them before they get to your cites is next to impossible.

And then there is war weariness... On prince or above I've never been able to win by conquest (couble times by domination) either because I run out of time or because someone else beats me to a spaceship victory.

The fact that you can't build forts outside of your borders makes it again harder. I have yet to have a choke point actually in my borders and building a city just so you can build a fort is not a good idea since then your economy goes to crap.

I think aggression in Civ4 is really easy. Swordsmen with city raider promotions beat archers in cities, even if you don't have catapults yet.

              really?

I've not seen that happening usually before I have catapults I can only take someone out if they are way below me in score and had a bad start. Maybe I'm doing something wrong I don't know (I also have catapults soon after I have swordsmen usually though)
