What they have to do with jails is beyond me, too
I don't think UBs necessarily have anything to do with the building they replace, though in some cases this is true. They just have similar effects and come at the same time.

One question...if I conquer a city with a mausoleum, is it going to turn into a jail, or remain what it was originally?

Don't be surprised if UBs are destroyed when you take over a city rather than just converting to the non-unique version.

So does everyone agree with me that the Madrassa and Odeon are probably the two weakest Ubs?

              No. "Masoleum" is weaker.

Mausoleum wasn't too hot either, at least it gives you a pretty useful benefit +2 happiness. The main drawback to it is that it doesn't come until fairly late. On the other hand, that point in the game is right when I tend to need some more happiness with my population hitting the limits of what I can support. So, once you get them, they are India's praetorians pretty much.

For people who are fans of Indian mausoleums, here is a link to a great one!

The Dun is none too great unless you are going to play on a highlands map. Kind of negates one of the special characteristics of the swordsman replacement as well. Weak!

Nope. Madrassa looks pretty sweet if I'm interpreting the preview correctly.

                    Madrassa - overall effects:

                    +25% research
                    can add 2 scientists
                    can add 2 preists
                    +4 culture.

My initial reaction was that this would reduce the overall usefullness of the Arabs but if Saladin gets his hands on Angkor Wat ...

                    Alternatively, following this path

Mysticism (which the Arabs start with) -> Meditation or Polytheism -> Priesthood -> Writing

will give the Arabs the chance to grab the later religions while researching other technologies by lightbulbing great prophets and still have a good chance of generating enough prophets to build the shrines.

I actually think the Dun is great. If the Celtic player purposely builds his cities on hills, his defenders are virtually as strong as a protective civ's units. That's a pretty big advantage, IMO.

My problem with the madrassa is that by the time I am building libraries, I generally have other options for generating great prophet points. There may be circumstances where I don't, but I think those would be fairly rare.
The Egytian Obelisk goes in a similar direction, but it comes early enough to make a big difference.

Agreed. Obelisk is better for a slingshot, I think. Egyptians can built it right off the bat. Heck, they could probably lightbulb Monotheism before anyone else even at HIGH difficulties doing this.

But the Madrass will allow you to generate Great Prophet points, and then once you got your prophet out switch immediately to scientists to get your academy in your capital.

I don't think it'll be easy to tell whether it is effective until playing it... I'm guessing it will be somewhat useful. But the added culture will be its other benefit.

Maybe it's just me but I view access to priest specialists as very useful, even without the great prophet points. While not on providing as much gold or production as a merchant specialist or an engineer specialist (unless you get Angkor Wat ) they still can be very useful in helping a civ get off the ground and comfortably into the mid game.

The main negative about the priest specialists granted by both the Egyptian and Arabic unique buildings is that Hatshepsut, Rameses and Saladin all have the Spiritual trait which reduces the cost of temples which also grant priests.

Keep in mind though that temples allow for the allocation of one priest specialist per temple. That makes the unique buildings more useful.

What's with the hate for Angkor Wat? It can be awesome if you build your game toward it and awful if you don't.

My initial gut feeling, if it wasn't apparent from above:

1 star: Dun, Salon, Odeon, Ma(u)soleum, Citadel

2 stars: Mall, Assembly Plant, Shale Plant, Research Institute

3 stars: Madrassa, Altar, Stock Exchange, Seowon, Mint, Apothecary

4 stars: Cothon, Pavilion, Obelisk, Terrace, Hammam, Trading Post, Ikhanda

                                No idea: Ger, Forum
