Overlooked this question earlier. I'd say the cheapest unit possible, given that you need to leave them as garrisons. If a more serious rival looms then pay to upgrade. For border towns/new conquests where your rival could counter a spearman is often a good idea to complement a bowman (if they have horses).

I think I may be able to get some time in tonight but it's secondary.

Yesterday night was wasted reformatting and updating my resume for some brain-dead HR manger that doesn't know C# and C#.NET are the same thing. (I'm so mad at that. Wasted the whole evening )

I promised DanQ I'd help with the sound and video for the Warlods Preview Part 3. I'm semi pro and have a few more tools at my disposal so I offered to help.

I've got time but I want to get done early so I know it's complete.

I did play a few turns but not much happened other than me reaching an agreement that I placed my second city in a crap spot. I should have worked that out a bit better. I was looking and found at least three other tiles that would have been better places than the one I chose.

Ah well, I'll have to work my way out of it. It's a challenge.

        Here's looking forward to tonight.

In terms of maintenance cost, a warrior is a longbowman is a mechanized infantry. It costs 1 gold per unit to maintain, no matter what it is. So if you're talking about maintenance costs, then get decent units. If you're talking about building new units to replace them, then I'd recommend going for the quickest defensive units you can. Keep the macemen for places where you might want to counter attack, like borders where an enemy might wander into your territory.

I'll have to disagree with you there - I think it's a perfectly good spot. You can mine the gems (post-iron), you're coastal (which is gets better the more sea techs you get), and you're on the river. The Dyes/Spices aren't available til Calender anyway so they will be in your borders by the time you research this tech, as it's not a high priority. The whole area is a bit uninspiring as a city location because of all that jungle, but the copper had to claimed.

PS: thanks for the work on the videos!

Man... How long are you playing the game at one sitting?

It sounds to me like it would take me longer to load the game and then close the game then you actually spend playing it!

You must really fight with yourself over each and every decision!

I don't know if this is sarcasm or not (mostly cause I don't know you well enough).

When I have a decision that I think is important I will fret for a time. If I think I can figure it out I'll move but if a certain time goes by and I can't tell the difference I'll just make a move to get it done.

As evidencd by several other conversations, I'm not a big plan maker, I mostly fly by the seat.
