I guess I've never really looked all that deeply into it, so is it only the founders of religions that are always sending missionaries to my cities?
Aside from the fact that any civ can send Missionaries, I find that comment about the AI never building Monasteries highly suspect. The AI is just as likely to construct one as with any other building. You just don't see them because that's one of the buildings that gets automatically destroyed when you capture a city.

Then were do they send those missionaries? Or are AI missionary failiure rating close to 90%? The only AI's I've seen who have > 90% of their cities with the same religion as their state religion are when I'm the one sending them missionaries

Monasteries do more than just build Missionaries, they also add culture and increase research, both of which give the AI incentive to build them. Just because you don't always see Missionaries doesn't mean the AI isn't building the structure that allows them.

I saw an ai spam a religion.

They got the holy city, built the shrine, and sent out missionarys to EVERY city on the (large) continent.

Eventually, I took the city just for the gold vaule it had (and domination victory). The shrine was making 40+ gold a turn.

One problem that I've encountered though. If you capture an enemy city with a Shrine and you don't have any Monasteries built of that religion, then it can be a hassle trying to spread it and benefit from the gold. I think the Shrine itself should at least allow you build Missionaries without a Monastery.
I like the idea of Shrines allowing missionary builds. As it stands now, I make sure whenever a religion I didn't found spreads to my lands, I build a monastery. Just in case I want to spread it around some more later

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

And I play as a Spiritual leader. That allows me to run Organized Religion whenever I want. ;-)
Participating in my threads is mandatory. Those who do not do so will be forced, in their next game, to play a power directly between Catherine and Montezuma.

I never said they don't build monasteries, I'm just saying that I've never seen the AI spam missionaries
