        • And finally:

          1658 Artillery…and Domination Victory.

...and it only took 89 hours and 26 minutes. GASP

My first Monarch victory, my first Marathon victory, and many thanks to Vel for the inspiration and example!

              • Thank you for providing us with a great Marathon experience by describing the game in so much detail, Hermann. It may not be quite the same as putting in the 89 hours and 26 minutes myself, but it's the best way to enjoy Marathon mode vicariously. I've printed your posts out and look forward to comparing your game to Vel's.

                • You printed my posts? Tree butcher.

The only mercy is that I left so many things abbreviated. [I hope that isn't *too* confusing.]

I very belatedly noticed that I made an unfortunate choice of abbreviation for Cumae. I rooted out some of the trios of asterisks, but I didn't go back through the earlier messages.

My thanks for the congrats and I hope you find the reading interesting or even--heaven forfend!--educational. I left some open questions here and there and I'd love feedback on those.

Not confusing, once I got used to it. Thanks for finishing this up, I am learning a lot from your plays.

Not all of us are so PC, but I guess it would not do to get 'poly branded as a porn site by the nanny robots.

Interesting AND educational. Thank you again!

If you want better answers to your questions, you might consider editing those posts and adding a save file so folk can see for themselves. I don't know about others, but I find it somewhat hard to tell what's on each tile even in good clear screenshots like you have posted. Rollover is a powerful tool!

                    Just my USD$0.02.

                    • Thanks smacfan. Unfortunately I don't think there's a way for me to go back and add saved files to existing messages (though I apparently could delete or swap existing attachments).

Anyway, back in 1142 AD I asked how to best use the 14 pop of the city of Rome. So here's that saved game.

So I was unable to re-assign any of Washington's 4 Specialists, and there don't seem to be any buildings that force specialists (though I do have one free specialist). Here's a save from 2 turns earlier, but Washington still has the same problem.

Also at 1250 AD I was asking for advice on "Choice of Civics" so if anyone has an opinion, please speak up!

Well, like all else it depends on what you need to emphasize at this point -- if you took the citizen on the 2f2h tile at the top of the fat cross and assigned it to the cottage at the SW (lower left) corner, your beakers would increase from 192 to 202, but your hammers would go down by 4 from 66 to 62, resulting in 14 turns for the Bank instead of 13, with no change in the turns to research. OTOH, 10 more beakers is nothing to sneeze at.

If you want that bank a *little* sooner, change the 2f2h at the top to one of the 1f3h forest tiles to get 68h instead of 66h, though it still says 13 turns for the bank (I don't understand that myself, 600h/68h is not 13 turns the way I learned arithmetic...). This will also slow your city growth from 33 turns to 65 turns, which you may or may not want.

Overall, the choices in the city right now are quite reasonable, but it always depends on what you need most. My personal choice would be for more beakers.

I realize that may not help much, but it's all I could see.

Sounds like there's a overflow from the last build

                            • Could be overflow, and sometimes I think it could be a bonus of some sort not reflected in the number of hammers displayed. Have you ever seen anything like that?

Whatever I've seen shown in the city management screen under hammers has been correctly calculated as

Adjusted Base + Overflow. Allowing for the overflow,

Time to build = (600-Overflow)/Adjusted Base.

68 hammers sounds like a huge number.
