I used to have a pretty compelling strategy game that would pop messages like 'you have now been playing for four hours, go for a walk' and stuff like that. Was pretty cool.

Never expect Tokugawa to act at all rationally.
Participating in my threads is mandatory. Those who do not do so will be forced, in their next game, to play a power directly between Catherine and Montezuma.

If you're alone on an island, and all the other civs are on another island, the best way to end the game is to fill 10-15 transports with Modern Armor and just razing everything you fight.

The better your starting location and hut-based goodies, the more likely you're sitting next to Toku, Monte and Izzy.

The Incan Leader (I think its him) has parkinsons when you tell him 'no'.

Nukes don't wipe away the earth anymore, but it sure looks cool when you drop 2 of 'em on each of their cities.

Conversely, a crappy but defensible starting position will result in your sitting next to Mansa, Hattie and Lizzie.

Even with a 6 city empire you aren't guaranteed to have Iron OR Copper OR Horses OR Elephants (Happened to me once)
"You are one of the cheerleaders for this wasting of time and the wasting of lives. Do you feel any remorse for having contributed to this "culture of death?" Of course not. Hey, let's all play MORE games, and ignore all the really productive things to do with our lives.
Let's pretend to be shocked that a gamer might descend into deeper depression, as his gamer "buds," knowing he was killing himself, couldn't figure out how to call 911 themselves for him. That would have involved leaving their computers I guess."

The AI's want to win, too. Leave yourself open, and your best friend might decide that your little empire would be better of as part of his empire...

Always check the Diplomacy screen before declaring war.

Build cottages. Lots and lots and lots of cottages.

Go for Polytheism because the AI nearly always gets Meditation first.

Win Lotto so you can afford an AMD FX-60 and Geforce 7800GXT and therefore play Standard maps.

If you stare at your monitor for sixteen hours in a stretch, your eyes will hurt.
                      I think, therefore I ponder.

That's very true. I've found I've had better luck against weak-but-highly-defended defenders than strong-but-poorly-defended defenders.
