I just love huge maps. I'm playing as Mansa in a huge map with only 6 civs... Barbs everywhere!
And yep, sometimes things gets slowed down in the late game. Annoying.
But my main reason IS my work, believe it or not!

Don't upgrade before it is necessary like I did. It's a waste of money.

I have only tried this on a large map. Are you using raging barbarians as well?

I thought upgrading to a 6600GT would stop my computer from freezing when playing the game. Didn't help. Not one bit.

Nope, I barely can deal with normal barbs!

Maybe the problem is not the graphic card... I mean, computers are strange creatures... What else could be the cause? Processor? Motherboard? I’ve heard about overclock issues. Memory, maybe? But you probably have tested all this.

Com'on, it's great fun. Try playing at one level lower with the "raging barbarians" option on - and enjoy your 20 turns or so peace at the beginning

I tested all that I can test. Seeing that the graphics card is not the problem now I suspect it's the motherboard. Such a pain to change it, though.

And the money I spent on the 6600GT I could spend on a new mobo instead

            Aro,

Not that my experience necessarily proves anything, but I have the Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 (with a 1.8gig processor and 512 MB RAM) and the game has worked darned well from the beginning. There are some glitches, but I've had precisely 1 crash since I bought the game (the day it was released).

So, while it may not be the spiffiest graphics card out there, it works for me

The game runs pretty well in my old computer (P4 2.00, 2GB RAMBUS – very old , GeForce 5600 256 MB) , with some lags in the late game.
However, I have to buy a new comp (actually, I just bought – the one I’ve described above, plus a GeForce 6800 256 MB ) because of my job. I need a little more processing power, better graphics and later I’ll buy more memory. The new machine is extremely upgradeable (processor and also memory – up to 4 GB), and this is very important to me, because it extends a lot the useful life of the equipment.
Of course I need to be sure the damn thing will run cIV pretty well too! That’s why I asked!
My philosophy is: If you have to spend money, spend it in a cIVilized way!

Sorry, I wasn’t bragging… But I would be very if I couldn’t run cIV in the new comp… And all those big problems with high-end machines scared me a lot.

If I were you I'd wait a bit to see what socket the AMD dual core processors will come on, and get a board with that.

Athlon 64 is better than P4, and Athlon 64 dual core is better than P4 dual core.

They'll come on socket AM2, which, for the first year or so won't be all that much of an improvement over 939 and will cost alot more.

It´s no use waiting for a better comp that will be available some time from now. If you think like that you´ll never be able to upgrade. You just have to accept that whatever setup you buy will be obsolete within a year or two...

Unfortunately, it's exactly what Dr Zoidberg says...
The better I can do is leave some space to a faster processor and more memory.

Yes, Moores law still applies. But I´m not that worried. Stuff gets cheaper when it´s been out for a while.

Bah, if I could run it in my P3 800mhz, 320Mb pc100, gf mx440 without a crash then it should run on anything that has been posted on this thread
If it doesn´t then you must check something
