As I saw the first screenshots for Civ IV I didn't like the graphics that much either, but it feels nice enough in the game... though I believe a better graphics mod will soon be made (one is already there)
This space is empty... or is it?

Aro - influenced by Sergio Aragones at all?

Arrian - I felt the same way about the graphics when I got it, but I have to say they've grown on me a bit. The closeup city view and ability to tell from the map whether a tile is being worked or not, especially, are two aspects I consider improvements over CivIII.

We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

If it's unimproved, it will have a little tent showing. If it's improved, the improvement will be animated (except cottages and farms, which I believe stick to the "tent" method). For instance, the windmill will be turning, mine producing occasional blasts of flame and smoke and lumbermill will be sawing away. Water tiles with boats are being worked.

damn, I've been playing all this time, and didn't know that. I always wondered what was up with those boats.

If, however, CivIV had been made with CivIII style graphics, updated to the current standard of quality, I think the game would look better.

CIV is not Pirates! Pirates! can look cartoonish. CIV needs to carry a little more gravitas (IMHO, of course).

What, you mean actually using color is cartoonish?

FWIW, I thought CivIII's style of graphics was nothing special. VERY blah, in fact.

civ3's graphics were blah (though made acceptable with snoopys mod).

Civ4's graphics are excellent. The only thing cartoony is the leader faces. But most are pretty good except for hatseph whatever her name is.

That, and the silly RTS stuff like right click to move and the info bar across the bottom and the little buttons around the minimap are things I'd have preferred to do without.
                    Bingo!

The experience loses its lustre - as a casual player, I can overlook less tight gameplay in favour of a more well-rounded gaming experience. This is exactly where the game falls off, exactly. There are always going to be tricks and exploits if all you are after is "winning". I used to just enjoy the whole experience of "playing".

Well, it is 90 miles away, but, yes, that's where it is.

Hatshepsut? I think she's the prettiest of the leaders.
Participating in my threads is mandatory. Those who do not do so will be forced, in their next game, to play a power directly between Catherine and Montezuma.

Most Improved Leader from CivIII to CIV, graphics-wise, goes to Catherine, hands down.

Not really. I think it's a couple hundred miles to the NW. It's in the heart of Ontario's ski country.

I thought I recognized the name. I spent a winter living in a winterized cabin at Wasaga Beach.
