  • The game needs better civ spacing

I just started to play a Continent game on a large map. In no time I ran into 7 of the other 8 civs in the game. In Civ 3, I could pretty much expect to find half of the civs on one continent and the other half on another, with maybe the occasional small continent with only one civ.

Plus, I find it annoying as hell to come across another civ just a few squares away from where I start. I don't like getting into early wars, I simply can't afford the troops, but that situation leaves me with no choice. Civ 3 had spacing in the editor that you could adjust to your liking, but in this version the civs just get plopped down anywhere.

And sometimes they end up in really ridiculous locations. No civ should have to start in the ice packs with only Tundra for miles around. It just makes for a weak civ in the game.

    Play a larger map?

I find 18 civ duel pangaea to be quite enough spacing. You have even more space than me, so what are ya complainin' about?

I haven't experienced any spacing problems when I started my first game (continents, standard), but now that I started a new game on a small continents map, I really start to see your point. Everyone is in my continent!
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

Try Custom Continents on Random Number of Continents and see if that is more to your liking.

Well the Large map is certainly better for spacing, but even still I find myself sometimes right on top of another civ. Unfortunately, my system can barely handle Large so I don't think Huge will be an option until I get a faster processor.

So why can't the civs be spread out a bit more? It's a bit silly to have them all appear on one continent. It takes away from the whole Age of Exploration thing. No need to, everyone's already here. I'll try your suggestion though.

                18 civs on DUEL?

My current game is a Large Continents map with 12 civs, and even that is pretty cramped. Ghandi, Monty and I (England) have the most cities (7 each), all the rest have 5 or less, though I'll soon have 9 cities since Sparta and Old Sarai are comeing close to flipping thanks to 2 well placed Culture Bombs.

                    Yeah, 18 Civs on Duel.
I'm playing a Marathon Noble game at the moment - I've got the Globe Theatre in a city near 4 seafood resources, so I'm slaving up a large army. Only 7 enemies remain out of the initial 17.

I should mention that I'm playing as Cathy.
Though Huyana Capac pwns the crap out of this map - get a free worker on turn 1, bum-rush 5 other civs with quechas and Expandosauraus.

Jeez, I just can't win. Now I'm getting small continents with just me and another civ! I want to end up on a decent sized land mass with about 3 or 4 other civs. Is that too much to ask?

Because you are on the biggest continent.

There's a game where only Victoria and I were on the same continent, but it was tiny and got very few resources.

Or you can reduce the number of computer players...

Well it shouldn't be that way IMO. When I think a Continent map, I think two landmasses more or less equal in size with maybe a third smaller one. And the civs are evenly spread out between them, not clumped together on one land mass. If that's how I wanted to play, I'd go for Pangea. And I don't want to reduce the number of players, I like the variety.

As for the spacing, I just started a new game and had Asoka start 8 squares away from me. If that's not being right on top of each other, I don't know what is. There's barely enough room for one of us to get a city inbetween. It really bugs me when that happens. I just restart the game, because I don't want to play a mad rush for territory/early war type of game. And being that close is exactly what that means.

Enigma Nova, what difficulty level are you playing at?
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.
