I had it going in one of my cities when all of a sudden I got the message that I could no longer build it and got some gold for the work that had been done. It is a National Wonder isn't it? The only thing I can think of is that there is some sort of time frame that you need to build it in, but I haven't seen that explained anywhere.

Why did my Ironworks stop being built?

Do you have this on save? Is it repeatable?
Oh, all your Iron and/or Coal mines weren't destroyed by some rogue units, didn't they?

No the Iron was still there, that was the first thing I checked. I'm wondering if mabye there's a mistake and the game is reading the Ironworks as a World Wonder instead. And no I don't have it on save. I'll be sure to keep one if it happens again.

Does the Ironworks have a pre-req?
I know this happened to me with the National Epic.
I was building a library in the city, I wanted the national epic so I added it to the queue. A couple turns later I got a Great Engineer, and decided to rush the NE with him. So I removed the library from the queue and rushed the NE.
Next turn, no National Epic, I got a refund instead.
What had happened is that the National Epic requires the Library as a pre-req, but I removed that from the front of the queue. The game should have then removed the National Epic too, but it didn't (bug).

It should have remove the NE the moment it became an invalid build (ie as I removed the library), instead it kept it until the start of the next turn, giving me the oppurtunity to burn the Great Engineer on it.
I lost a city (my trade network was not disconnected though), and then suddenly I couldn't build globe theatre and forbidden palace.

WTF!!
I'm tired of this buggy game. I'm also tired of losing all the time. I think my civ4 days are over.

Emphasis added.

Well this would make sense if you had the minimum number of theatres/courthouses, and the lost city had one of each, bumping you to below minimum...
I've never had this happen before. But perhaps I have not lost a city when building national wonders.

But I've lost 3 games in a row. Losing is not fun. If it was, I'd be doing real life stuff. But since I'm a loser in real life, I prefer to play a game where I can actually win.

It's a bug that should be updated. In the meantime, either accept your Great Merchineer or reload and retry.
PS. I reloaded. ofcourse I reloaded. If I hadn't reloaded I wouldn't have located the source of the problem and would have had to make a "WTF?" post on poly (and neglect to include a save/previous autosave because everyone loves a good mystery) .Last edited by Blake; January 2, 2006, 22:33.
