yeah well I'm still pissed. I'm sure my problem was due to lack of courthouses etc. But I still hate this game.

You'd think preatorians would do better against axeman.

Axeman is awesome, that's why I almost always beeline Broze Works nowadays. If I don't get any copper I'll shoot for Iron Works. If I don't have both I will be very tempted to start over.

You didn't happen to build it in another city did you, or conquer a city where it had been built?

I get this message all the time after I switch what city I'm building a wonder in. The production I wasted stays around until I finish the wonder elsewhere, and then it gives it back to me in a message like this one.

Bismarck's Longbows and Catapults will then laugh at you.

Except he's kinda right. If you start over because you have no iron or copper then I feel sorry for you.

                And the coal?

Edit: If you don't need both then move along, nothing to see here.

Ironworks requires Coal -or- Iron, not necessarily both. I don't know if it has a building pre-requisite, most likely a forge. Another possibility is that he built the ironworks by mistake somewhere else in his empire.
In any case, attach Before and After saves.

It wasn't that I wasn't allowed to builf it, I was actually in the process of doing so. It was about half-way constructed when suddenly the game told me that I wasn't able to build it anymore and gave me a bunch of gold. It was just as if it was a World Wonder, not a National one.

And there was still a forge in this city? It didn't get sabotaged or something by a spy?

No, it happened before Spys came along and I happened to be at peace with my neighbour at the time. I never thought to actually check, but I'm positive it was still there.

Well, I'm at a loss here on how that happened.

... As am I, unless the Ironworks were built somewhere else in his empire somehow. :/
