Talk about pleasant surprises, all the little modifications in the 1.52 patch have been a pleasure to "come across" as I play. They really tweeked a lot of little things (like, for example, now using ESC instead of ENTER to exit city detail screen). My first game after the recent patch was full of pleasant little surprises!
One of these days I'll make 501 posts, and you won't have to look at my silly little diplomat anymore.
"Oh my God, what a fabulous room. Are all these your guitars?"
"The Rock Island Line she runs down into New Orleans And just outside of New Orleans is a big toll gate And all the trains that go through the toll gate They gotta pay the man some money But of course, if you got certain things on board You're okay and you don't have to pay the man nothin And just now we see a change comin down the line When you come up to the toll gate The driver, he shout down to the man I got pigs, I got horses, I got cows I got sheep, I got all livestock, I got all livestock I got all livestock The man say, you alright boy just Get on through, you don't have to pay me nothin And then the train go through And when he go through the tollgate The train gotta have a little bit of steam And a little bit of speed And when the driver think he safely on the other side He shouts back down the line to the man I fooled you, I fooled you I got pig iron, I got pig iron I got all pig iron.."
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

I don´t know if it´s pleasant, but at least it´s a surprise. I played the large highlands map the other night. It´s all well and good until I get hit with the barbarian invasion from hell. Loads of the little buggers running around trying to cut off my iron and gold supply and causing widespread panic and mayhem. I thought, yeah this will blow over soon and I can get back to building something other than military units. But it didn´t! They just kept on coming. This stopped me dead in the tracks and my distance to the leader increased from 10 points to 130! And right before I gave up I was overtaken by the guy behind me who I had lead by a good 50 points earlier.
Now that´s a surprise compared to Civ 3. Really disruptive barbarians...

yeah, it seems the highland map amplifies the Barbarian portion of the game.
use Archers on hills as sentries. upgrade hill Def x2 and Drill I. that way you can speed along the hills to get in their way so that they will attack you.
then once your cities are basically picketed, use workers around the cities.. don't go for outlying resources unless you have the archers to protect it.
and for cities 2-3 make them as close to pure commerce cities as you can to get the cash to keep the army.
also find the closest edge and put your self on it. then you can defend outwards from your empire, rather than 360.
Thankfully I was in the top right corner of the map. So very few barbs attacked from the right, but still... I´ll try the map again and try to get it right this time
*beep*
"I got pig iron, I got aaaaaallllll pig iron."
Can't see the fun in such(for the ear) tedious quotes that also makes me wonder what that guy took right before he chose to say that.
But other than that, this game is full of little pleasant things.
Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.-Isaiah 41:10 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made - Psalms 139.14a

barbs rape me pretty bad on lakes maps too. I can't seem to beat those weird maps. Even the maze map I got my ass kicked (though in that case it was from the ai's getting a points lead on me)

Highlands maps are my favourite maps actually. This is the first time I got my ass handed to me. Maybe I´ll revert to Normal sized maps?
I'm actually finding that the bigger maps are more fun... the barbs havemore space to build up, and can become almost as dangerous as some of the weaker civ's.
