An update will be released soon which will suggest settings and install everything itself, so you might want to wait a little (I am going to finish it through this weekend).
Seriously, they need to put you on the payroll. Whether or not it ends up getting the game working for me, I think you're doing a helluva job.

          Thank you Harkonnen.

May your memory not be alocated by more than one entity of same type at any given time

Thanks! Though, that's the thing that saves ~50% of memory saved by this patch. Ehh.. sorry for tautology

I see no visible Tautology in my sight at this moment of observation.

add me to the list of happy users - my own 'big game crash after 2 turns' save now works. Actually it doesn't any more cos they've flown away to Alpha Centauri for a space race victory finally.

A mod should 'sticky' this thread until the next official patch.
Not only does Harkonnen's patch seem to help everyone, to some extent, who is having tech difficulties, but the guy is so helpful to those who continue to have questions about it.

Yes, I think so too... This thread is not as alive as CFC one (that one is sticky on itself just due to replies ). Heck, it's nearly 30k views during just 4 days of its lifetime...

Also, CFC has posted this fix in their news section. My gratitude goes to Thunderfall for that, their site administrator. I didn't even ask to make that thread sticky

It's a little redundant that the threads which would bump themselves to the top get stuck at the top anyway.

As it turns out, the grain of salt that I threw in earlier actually flavored the broth, so to speak... I'm now playing the Earth scenario as Hatty, and am waging a war with Julius who is angry that I keep refusing him elephants! At the same time barbarians are attacking in waves from West Africa! I am quite happy, so thank you.

In the end I set my vid mem usage to 50, and insane mode is on.

There are a few small problems that weren't there before though. Drawing the grid on the map takes about 20 secs whereas before it was almost instantaneous. I have resorted to simply leaving the grid on rather than consulting it on and off, which works fine. The movies are a touch choppy, but then I've seen em plenty of times already, so I'm not bothered. Also, loading the game takes somewhat longer than before (about an extra 30secs or so.)

The obvious benefits are that it has not yet crashed, and the frame rate is significantly better! Woohoo!

                        (Incidentally, I have a P4 3.4Ghz, 6600GT, 1Gig RAM.)

Now that would be stating it mildly!

I haven't got around to play Civ4 for some days now, and therefore haven't had the opportunity to try out this fix. Now, what I'm wondering, is this:

My game works. That means, it works as long as I have no other programs running and I don't try larger maps than size small. I do get some weird hangups with loads of funny colours and stripes for some seconds before the game resumes. Will I benefit on trying this fix, or is it mostly for those who can't play properly without CTD's and such? Will I be able to play bigger maps? Will my small problems be better or disappear? I know it's hard to say for sure, but I thought I'd ask and see if there's an answer out there.

Well, it solved some issues I didn't expect it to solve. Like black terrain or stuttering movies in some cases.

You can give it a try. It's easy to install (upack and start, read details only if you have problems). Also it's easy to remove.
