Although with 1.09 patch it doesn't reboot my system anymore, it still crashes to the desktop with a (more graceful) error message (the generic windows error message box). Same thing - in late game on a Huge map, even panning the viewing screen a bit after several turns would
1. the game would stop responding;
2. show some black squares in the lower half of the screen, as if it's trying to refresh the map but system too busy doing *something*.
3. hard drive access like crazy
4. and then it would be OK again, for a couple of moves and turns;
5. then finally at one point it would just CTD.
When CTD the Windows desktop resolution would be like 640x480 by 4bits (no kidding). It would take ~30sec for the desktop to become normal again (1280x1024x32). If I exit the game at step 4, the desktop would behave as such, too. Then I restart the game, the whole cycle begins again in a couple of turns.
The same thing happens to 1.00, except that in 1.00 it used to restart the system by itself, unless I play the game in Window mode (instead of Full-Screen). It didn't give any error message in 1.00 though.
The game would work fine all the way until mid-game when I start trading World Maps with the AIs (11 of them), and start seeing more "stuff" on the map. This CTD can be induced by just panning around the map, or zooming out toward globe view, or simply moving units around.
CTD happens more frequently later in the game. By 2000AD I would have to restart the game every other turn. By 2007, I have developed a habit of Quick-Saving multiple times even within the same turn. It becomes almost unplayable.
Am I the only one having this issue? Remember, it's late game on Huge Map, 11 AIs. I know it's OK on Standard.
OK to answer the question "what's the spec?" here it is:
P4 3.4, 1GB RAM, GeForce 6600 / 128MB, XPpro, plenty of space. Nothing fancy, but I don't think the specs matter much anyway.
I've tried troubleshooting (do that for a living).
- Reinstalling and re-patching
- New game after patching
- stopping and killing all services and processes (right now Windows is running with 20 processes, only). No fat, no meat -- as barebone as you can ever get
- drivers, dx9c install and reinstall
- Overclock, underclock, standard clock
- lowing the Graphics option, raising the Graphics options... low res texture...
Of course, I haven't tried different hardware and OS.
If anyone can run a Huge Map game without problem in the late-game with 11 AIs, let me know your specs and whatever else might have helped. Thanks.
