I actually have no problems with getting attacked now as long as I can survive until people get Military Tradition. I find it much easier with this patch to get defensive pacts, and the AIs tend to take them with each other much more readily. Once the whole world is in two conglomerates of defensive pacts, wars become impossible. No more can you just bribe Monte and Alex to divide the world up between them.

For surviving wars before then, I find getting Heroic Epic absolutely essential. 100% military production = 100% larger army. It's difficult to get an appropriately experienced unit, though. I've done it just by practicing on barbs, but you need to be diligent.
