It worked fine on 1.00 only getting a little sloppy in the end game. There should at least be an option to turn off the graphics card checker (I have onboard graphics! )

    C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4

    Open up _Civ4Config

then set this value to 1 to turn this immensely annoying 'feature' off

FWIW, I have an interesting data point; I get some blackness if I use a map with wrapping on X and Y axis.

It's a SIS 650 (drivers updated, DirectX 9 installed). I know it's kinda old and has no T&L, but if I can see leaderheads, units, cities, forests, jungles, flood plains, waves moving, and can zoom pretty well, why can't I see normal terrain??
Despite this video card, my laptop is above min req.
      Thanks for asking.

EDIT: Can also see hammers, bread, coins and every resource available. Just not normal terrain...

1.09's been good for me. The sound doesn't skip in ANY movies anymore, though I get small video stutters in the intro movie. The wonder movies all work fine now, sound, video, whatever.
I'm playing with a large map and 6 opponnents now, we'll see how game play goes, but for now its good. I'm playing with better datail, and there's no more skipping and hesitating as it goes from one location to the other, and end of turn is cycling almost instantly.

my specs: Athlon 2800+, Geforce 4 4200 Ti, 1 Gb Ram, XP SP2, latest video drivers, DirectX from the game CD.

                well, that didn't last long.
had a crash to BSOD, and when I got it up and running again, all of a sudden my system is below the "recommended specs" and everything defaults to the lowest setting. man, I need an upgrade.

How demanding is it to see plains, desert, hills, grassland and mountain tiles??? FIX IT already!!
I did a 2 minute quick test run, and my black terrain problems are finally gone! Also the tile production info was finally displayed correctly when founding a city. Didn't meet any leaders to check their heads, but that's not of importance anyway.

Everything is still not working properly, cows/horsies seemed to be still invisible.

All worked fine before the patch

All works fine now, but a little bit better. Movies were stuttering very slightly at first, but I think I've pinned that down to leaving Folding@Home running in the background by mistake

In case it helps or matters: Athlon X2 3800 / 1Gig RAM, Radeon X850XT with Cat 5.11 drivers, Audigy2, WinXP Pro SP2

I give it a big thumbs down.

I had worked out 90% of my CTD and CTR problems, now I'm having a few more - not a lot, but more than I was.

Memory usage is significantly less - it was getting to 100 - 200MB free on my 1.5Gb, now it's 350 - 450 Free all the time, but now I'm getting really bad slowdowns when the diplomacy screens come up. Funnily enough - it's exaclty like it was when I had only 1.0Gb. It's like instead of fixing the problem they just capped the maximum RAM used...

I used to get rivers with the black texture infrequently and a alt-tab out, then back in fixed it. Now I get them frequently, and they come back very quickly.

Gameplay wise - dunno. It's still too early to tell, but the core of the game is still very screwed.

If all you were getting is a CTD before the patch you'd probably be better off without it, my CTD problem is still there, only it now comes with an error report to send to microsoft which is the good part. The bad part is that the CTD changed system settings to 800x600 4bit - that's really ugly. I rebooted to clear that up. Previously I was able to get to around mid-game before CTD, this time I was in the very early stages. I'm not even going to bother trying again until they improve on this patch.

Have to say though that their response time in actually letting the community know they were working on a patch is impressive compared to a certain other company with their flagship game expansion. It took them over 6 months to even admit there was a problem, and a further one & a half to finally give us the patch we were screaming for. And we only got that because of the fuss we kicked up. I'm glad that's not the case with Firaxis, and hope they continue to work on the issues and come up with a solution soon, meantime I'm going to be playing something else until they do.

another curious thing...now Genghis Khan's left (his left, not my left) eye isn't rendering quite properly. When he's squinting, his eye is white. when his eyes are open a little wider, you can see the bottom half of his eyeball but not the top.

                              Game setup????

I downloaded the patch via my civ4 screen. Then it went to install wizard.

I got a runtime error saying, setup has not detetced a previous version of civ4 on your computer??????

Hello, how did I download the patch from civ4 then? Arghhhh!!!

So now it won't install cause it thinks I don't have civ4 on my computer. I am really, really getting tired of this.

"The setup has detected that no version of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is installed. This update requires that a previous version of the application be installed."

Specifically this is what it tells me.
