Too many turns without upgrading! You should be pushed back into reserve (grand father mode), or at least on second line / logistic duties ("gimme some money and the keys of the car, daddy!").

These modifiers you mention above should not affect attacking strength - they negatively affect the defender, and you've already taken this into account.

Ah, but surely the 6 year old daughter, being female, should get a free first strike bonus. Perhaps the combat results, having due regard to circumstances, are not unreasonable.
