Putting it in real terms, the situation would be an advanced tank division fighting against a group of guerilla fighters in urban terrain, where the guerilla fighters are poorly armed but have by far superior knowledge of the area. That makes it possible, but not very probable, for the guerillas to win.

I've had longbowman take out my rifleman heaps because they were fortified and the city they were win was on a hill and they were city defender veterens. Odds were 1 to 1 when I attacked and 2 to 1 against them when they attacked.

      Hardly long odds.

        yeah...

IMO, some of the combat ratings are not very good...

modern armor, based upon my experience with combat, should be at least 60 (because it should dominate weaker, older units)

I haven't played enough combat to have a full list yet, but I will make a list of what I think is good ratings.

the helicopter gunship needs to be much strong also... probably above 35 at least...

basically, there needs to be a greater disparity between modern units and ancient-medieval units...

there is no way in gods green earth that a navy SEAL is going to ever lose to crossbowman...

never ever ever ever ever ever...

sorry, but balance needs to take a back seat to common sense...
To us, it is the BEAST.

It doesn't matter if it was a significant hurdle or not. It doesn't matter how good or bad the strategy of the attack was.

With such a huge technological gain there should be no need to pedantically siege a city.

Do you think an M1A1 Abrams is going to be effected by even modern hunter's compound bows?

          No, it isn't.

It shouldn't happen, EVER, for any reason, at all, period.

          Not even a 1/100^100 chance.

There should be certain categories of units which CAN NOT be damaged by other catagories of units.

Such as, a Modern Armor shouldn't be able to be damaged by a unit w/o at least gunpowerder... other than siege weapons. Swords, spears, axes, arrows, knifes... these things aren't going to harm a modern armor.

It's no that big of a deal really... but I really don't understand why some ar attempting to make excuses for it's ability to happen reguardless how rare.

          It's simply wrong.

I argue because of the almighty duality of Civilization.

            Gameplay VS Reality

I really think gameplay is good that way, maybe it need some tweaking. But I really do think it's good, really good that way... for me, better than Civ3.

I dont argue in the reality of a Tank division VS Longbowman... because reality doesn't work that way.

I understand what you say, but for gameplay I think it's better that way...

            See ya

If you just want perfect game balance, why play such a dynamics and epic game as Civ?

Or, just start out with everyone already at the highest era, then it won't matter.

I don't want perfect game balance, I want to dominate whenever possible! Or be punished by easy defeat when I'm a dismal failure. I don't want my longbowmen killing modern armor, I don't want my modern armor loosing to longbowmen.

That's been one of the best aspects of the Civ franchise IMO... like getting Nuclear weapon when some other civs still didn't have gunpowder. or finding yourself staring down a field of cannons when all you had was spearmen!

It's great fun! Too much balance -> less fun.

In that case, maybe you can edit the games. I dont know if there is an option to make a armor units undestructive to a no-gunpoweder units.

Or higher the strenght of each modern units... Dont know.

I dont have spend too much times in the xml files.

                  see ya

So a complete pushover when you're attacking with Modern Armor vs. Longbowmen is fun? That's unusual, I find myself completely bored, in any game, when the level of challenge absolutely doesn't meet my level of skills, in any direction. I don't have fun in Civ if I'm three eras ahead in technology, I don't have fun in some online shooters if I get killed 15 times without shooting an enemy once.

Anyway, if you have Modern Armor and they have Longbowmen, you have more than one MA. Losing that one isn't going to matter. And use your Artillery and Bombers to take out the city defenses. If you do that, the chance of you losing will be extremely faint.

While I agree that this is the sort of thing which should really never happen, it does. Necessary changes can be implemented, but I'm not too worried about it. If you're bringing modern armor to bear against longbowmen, it might be time to contemplate upping the difficulty a bit.

Besides, without such things the tank scene of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" would have been awfully boring. Oops! They're dead!

Flaming arrows? Set fire to the area around the tank, cook its occupants...

Or titanium arrows jamming the tracks =].

(tanks are particularly vulnerable in urban combat... anyone can take one out)

You just have to be pure moron to complain about something like this.

And, of course, its a Civ tradition. A testement to the broad appeal of the game is that it draws folks from both ends of the gene pool and IQ range.

Lets be honest...this can all be explained by the phrase:

                                "You suck"
