I used to always be awestruck at the crystal-purity of the programming. I think Civ4 is an extremely interesting variation. But it's definitely a step backwards in terms of programming quality. I've been playing computer games as my main hobby since 1982! This first release of Civ4 is just ridiculously buggy. And I'm talking about bugs, not hardware or graphics issues.
I take it you never tried to use airpower in civ3, then. Or scientific golden ages in C3C. I forget which bugs were in civ1 and 2, I seem to recall there being a ai gold bug in 2, but could be mistaken, its been years since I played 2.

Civ1 didn't have bugs. You know they were 'undocumented features'.
Are games more buggy today or are we just more complainy now that we have the 'net? I know I am. Ah, to return to that simple life when I didn't know that Civ1's AI didn't build Wonders, they just got them for free.

Civ I and II were pretty bug free. No issues that I can remember. In Civ III the Fighters didn't intercept, but the rest of the game played flawlessly. Civ IV is plain old buggy.

I personally have several bug problems from CTDs and Reboots to terrain graphics dropping in and out. From all the different problems I have read about I also get the feeling that some of the bugs might be unrelated to each other, but who knows?

I have read all the reviews and see no bugs mentioned in any of them which has made me wonder if the reviewers were sent a different build of the game then I have. This might also explain why some folks can play right out of the box with no issues what so ever while others are plaqued with all kids of bugs. I read one post where the poster bought 3 copies of the game and 2 of them were all buggy, but the third played like a charm. He didn't post the build numbers though.

grr... the game won't load right now so I can check and post my build number.

I'll get it tomorrow, off to bed now. Maybe I'll have a nice shiney patch to fix all my woes when I get home from work tomorrow.

Remember that they moved the relase date up a whole month. No doubt that extra month of play testing would have exposed most of the items in this patch.

It seems like one of the 200 play testers could have found the bug which prevents you from using the mouse's scroll wheel in the MP lobby. If you've ever had to scroll then you'd have known about this bug. Sure, you can work around it with the arrow keys but it is still a glaringly obvious bug.

Playing the role of the devils advocate, perhaps during the test there wasnt more than a half dozen people in the lobby at once?

Apparently you haven't been paying attention to the 100's of people with the proper computer set up for this game being hurt by the bugs in the game .
Its the games fault and if you don't see that you are not looking at the pages and pages of people explaining that very thing.

But this version, for all the cool changes, is a programming swamp. lt has MANY more bugs than all the predecessors. It is NOT really playable (and I say that having logged over 20 hours on it since it came out recently). Civ III, at the moment, is superior.

I have no hopes that one patch will fix this kludgy programming. But no doubt I'll keep playing.

However, I keep thinking about Master of Orion III, which took a great franchise, used crummy programming and tried to throw in a million radical changes, and ended up with unplayable crap.

CivIV is still holding my interest. But I'm starting to get extremely annoyed at the bugs. I find a new bug every hour.
                            I can't remember ever seeing a single bug in Civ 1, 2, or 3.
I've had over 40 hours play, am not a fanboy, and have not had any bugs... at least none that I noticed. What bugs are you all finding?

They have always planned on a later patch to add the Pit Boss to MP games, so an early patch is no surprise.

100's out of 100,000's of sales do not make a buggy release.

And this is a 3D PC game, did you:

                              #1. Update all your drivers?
                              #2. Defrag your HD?
#3. Check to make sure you have enough memory/virtual memory?
#4. Is your Vid card supported? (3D games with T&L are very vid card demanding)

The only problems I have had are graphical glitches (like boats sailing at a 45 degree angle). Hopefully these and the lack of a Pit Boss will be addressed.

                                A couple of things:

                                - Once I got my video driver updated, I have had no show-stopper bugs, and I've played probably 50-60 hours... maybe more, I forget

                                - It seems to me that no matter how many testers you have, how much time you have and how much money you have, there will be bugs in computer programs. I don't really understand why, not being a programmer, but it just seems that way. My wife works in our (not our as in we own!) company's IT department. Every few months they have a "version" where they update all manner of systems. And every single time, one or more things "blow up." Every time. It sucks, it's not right, but it just keeps on happening.

And as I recall, CivIII was "the buggiest game ever" when it came out, too. CivII, of course, had been perfect and oh my god what did they do? CivIII wasn't really "right" until patch 1.17, IIRC. Both expansions also needed extensive patching.

                                It sucks, I agree.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.
