This is the state of the industry - nothing unique to Firaxis.
This is the necessity of complex design, nothing unique to software. It's long been an adage that you shouldn't buy a car the first year that model's on the market. Not only might you have to put up with recalls, but there are plenty of non-recallable things they'll find ways to do better.

And is it possible to go through years of schooling without having seen errors in your textbooks? It's not that they weren't proofread, but it can take hundreds or thousands of hours might it take to check every problem, just to ensure a minus sign wasn't excluded.

So I'd be glad that it's an industry that can be patched at all, and moreso that Firaxis is on top of it. And more bright side: if this was an MMORPG, you could have paid the store price and been paying a monthly fee for a game that's crashing out.

        Bah!

The fanboys on this thread are ridiculous. Yes, Civ is the all time greatest game. Yes, it's the ONLY game that has had me and my wife going back to it over and over and over.

But this version, for all the cool changes, is a programming swamp. lt has MANY more bugs than all the predecessors. It is NOT really playable (and I say that having logged over 20 hours on it since it came out recently). Civ III, at the moment, is superior.

I have no hopes that one patch will fix this kludgy programming. But no doubt I'll keep playing.

However, I keep thinking about Master of Orion III, which took a great franchise, used crummy programming and tried to throw in a million radical changes, and ended up with unplayable crap.

CivIV is still holding my interest. But I'm starting to get extremely annoyed at the bugs. I find a new bug every hour.
        I can't remember ever seeing a single bug in Civ 1, 2, or 3.

You must not have played those games more than a few times, then.

So it IS possible! Well then GOOD! I shall continue to try to win over my girlfriend into playing Civ with me!

                    Well, shoot

Well, shoot. I've been reading forums about Civilization for 14 years, and I understand that there were many bugs and patches for the first three versions. But I'm telling you, I've played hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of Civ games, and I've won Civ2 and Civ3 at emperor level or better, and I just don't ever remember running into a bug that interfered with my play experience. I used to always be awestruck at the crystal-purity of the programming. I think Civ4 is an extremely interesting variation. But it's definitely a step backwards in terms of programming quality. I've been playing computer games as my main hobby since 1982! This first release of Civ4 is just ridiculously buggy. And I'm talking about bugs, not hardware or graphics issues.

I have to admit that I am looking forward to the patch. Maybe I'll finally be able to play the gme at it highest detail level without it periodically freezing up on me.

That said, while I have to admit that Civ IV isn't a perfect game, it is still a very good game. The guys (and girls) at Firaxis deserve out complements, our appreciation, and our thanks, not our endless complaints. Writing a multi-million line program isn't easy, and catching all of the bugs simply isn't possible.

I can play Civ 4 well on my laptop, the only frustrating problem is the memory leaking which slows down the game a lot (actually, it's the only problem I have). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they fix the memory leaking problem.

Muddeh I am having the exact same problems you are.

at this point I have to say Firaxis bites. htey could not have possibly beta tested this and not noticed these problems. I own a dell P4 2.8GHz, 512 MB Ram, 128MB GeForce FX video card.

I wasn't expecting top notch performance as I only have the recommended level of RAM...but this thing is a slug.

                              Who wrote this code anyways?

So how come I've been able to log over 40 hours of game time without any significant problems so far?
