IS it just me or does Civ4 become rather dull fast?
Oh God, not this **** again! I'm sorry, but you've already been beating in this this is the Civ X.Y thing. CivIII, if you are unaware has been called 2.5 already by a number of posters. So, perhaps you think of CivIV as a Civ2.7 perhaps?
Please... CivIV has more innovations than CivIII did. CivIII was actually a step BACK from SMAC. The only successful advancement it had was borders (resources were poorly done in CivIII).

the problem as I see it is this. the game has been streamlined. great. no more boring perennial micromanagement. in addition the game has been shortened..? good for MP, but not what I want for SP. unit numbers have been reduced. ok... kinda good, but combat becomes more difficult with fewer units. lose one and youre set back quite a bit. also the epochs fly by too fast in a regular game. you dont have time to build all you want. maybe thats not the ideal strategy, but regardless. the game flys by, which is a MP pro, IMO SP con.
but heres the crux. the game has been made easier to control. but the complexity hasnt gone up. the result is, we have less boring work, but we dont have more fun work...
I agree 100% with this!
The problem with civ was always that the early eras were fun until someone reached the modern or late industrial era.
So what happened now? They shortened exactly those epochs where I had fun before! The ancient era is incredibly fun, but then the medieval, classic, renaissance and industrial (or whatever they are called) eras fly away so quickly, that before I realize the game is over, and it leaves a taste of emptiness behind.

I agree with the above poster and the Quated poster also! Let me put it this way ... I have to talk myself into playing a game of Civ4?! That just isnt right! After 5 games of it or so its just dam boring and I feel rushed through stuff! I buy games like Civ for single player why do companies always think I want to play Multi-Player? Or worse yet try to force me too? Why cant they just have a mode for single player that isnt designed for Multi-Player?
Ive lost alot of respect for FIRAXIS over this version of the game. I'll sum it up in a simple phrase below...
Very pretty game, yet very boring and leaves a bad taste in your mouth!
Maybe you feel bored because essentially Civ4 is the same as 3 and 2 and 1. No, not exactly the same and Civ4 (when I can get it to work) is a much more masterful game. But realistically, its still the same idea of build units, explore, build improvements, attack, etc. Civ 1 started the big 4 X craze but really, there are tons of game with slight variants out there now.
Thats why Civ3 ultimately was the big letdown, seen it done it. SMAC was exciting because there was a change, new world, more intriguing story, new concepts.
I think Civ4 will ultimately prove to be the best version out there, but maybe some of us Civ1'ers have just played too may turns.......well, maybe just one more turn.
.......shhhhhh......I'm lurking.......proud to have been stuck at settler for six years.......
Only draw back is that the epic in SP is way too short, a civIII game could last a week for me, but an epic game in civIV last less than a day. YUCK! Maybe something could be done about that. I haven't tried the MP yet!
1st let me say that Im honored that you posted in my thread!
I understand what you are saying about the micromananging and all. Yet Im asking why do you force people into a Multi-Player enviroment? Dont you think most people like 80%+ pick up Civ games to sit back and have a SOL game? Thats why Civ is such a HUGE success! It was never a success for Muli-Player! If we wanted Multi-Player we can play Starcraft or say AOEIII or even WoW type games. Do you think that you guys could make the EPIC game much better for us NON-Multi-Player types???
PS..How the HELL did the ATI installer bug get past Q/A? - heh just poking some fun at yah!
I agree with you....Civ 4 just didn't "hook" me the way the previous ones had. I would play constantly with the others but with this, after one long game was over I lost interest.
I think it's partially due to the memory leak which makes the modern era on huge maps unplayable.
If he WAS my brother... he'd owe me a tour of Firaxis- and a chance to work for them as an animator! But it IS odd how our names are spelled the same- the Shafer version is the rarest version.
And Civ 4 has hooked me more than civ 3 did off the bat. I've liked: Civ 1, 3 and 4- 2 was was -eh- for me.
I agree with the poster. I think the developers tried so hard not to take the fun out.. that they inadvertently took the fun out.
Why it's no fun...
23 turns to get an Archer?
40 turns to get a Lighthouse to improve growth so you can finally spend another 20 turns to get a Settler?
If hitting the Space Bar is your idea of fun....
Watching your upgraded Warrior produced with Barracks getting chowed on by a lion and killed? Then looking forward to spending another 15 turns to replace him?
Spending 1/5 th of my treasury to upgrade one unit?
Watching my Galley move a whole wopping 2 spaces?
Finally meeting a new civilization only to find every trade option is off the table? What's up with that?
Not being able to trade a tech for resources?
Penalizing a player for ICS? I thought that was a great tactic.
Can't pick which naval vessel to attack with a Sub?
No more Privateers?
The only thing I want to mod about this game is to put more of the Civ III fun stuff back in to Civ IV
