  • IS it just me or does Civ4 become rather dull fast?

I have been playing Civ since Civ1 was released and have boughten and played every Civ ever made except for CivNET! Yet this game is Graphical great and everything for the most part seems to be there and AI seems alot better yet....for some reason I feel kinda bored? Maybe it just seems like its just one big MEGA patch of Civ3 to me? In fact I'd almost gamble to say I find Civ3 more enjoyable! Now dont get me wrong Civ4 is a great game just doesnt feel that much different to me then Civ3 except for different Graphics and made Dummy proof! Maybe its the dummy proof feeling thats wrecking it for me?

    What do you all think?

I think its time for multiplayer. You've reached the limited lifespan that AI opponents provide.

Don';t worry about it this time, besides a few minor bugs the multiplayer is about 10x better than Civ3..

I'm shocked that you'd say you are bored of CivIV and would prefer CivIII. I put down CivIII after 3 games because I HATED it. I think CivIV, OTOH, is what CivIII should have been.

                Thats my point!

Well thats my point that this game feels like a completed Civ3 and not really a leap forward! Maybe Rhye's Mod has spoiled me in Civ3 LOL!

                  i agree. civ4 is more like civ3.5
the only change is religion and civics.
except from that its just civ3 improved. combat system better (still produces a few strange battles) streamlining making things nicer and easier, better graphics... its nice and all, but its nothing NEW. civics is from SMAC and should have been in civ3 (which used civ1 govs... how daft is that) and religion is a nice touch but not revolutionary.

the problem as I see it is this. the game has been streamlined. great. no more boring perennial micromanagement. in addition the game has been shortened..? good for MP, but not what I want for SP. unit numbers have been reduced. ok... kinda good, but combat becomes more difficult with fewer units. lose one and youre set back quite a bit. also the epochs fly by too fast in a regular game. you dont have time to build all you want. maybe thats not the ideal strategy, but regardless. the game flys by, which is a MP pro, IMO SP con.

but heres the crux. the game has been made easier to control. but the complexity hasnt gone up. the result is, we have less boring work, but we dont have more fun work...

I'm not sure I agree. I can see your points, but I think it just takes a little time to get "into the skin" of Civ IV. The pace is so much different (think about production in cities, if nothing else) and the micromanagement is pretty much gone unless you seek it out. Those things alone might be enough to make the game difficult to become intimate with--especially if you're used to (as I am) playing Civ III for years and years.

Take for example the complexity, as mentioned in a previous post. It took me a long time to understand the complexities of Civ II and especially III. I think there are a lot of complexities we have yet to fully grasp; the game was just released a week ago, after all!

I think we should give Civ IV some more playing time before judging it as boring. Let's give it a chance to surpass simply a "Civ 3.5." I think we're at fault here, not the game.

                    Keepin' the faith . . .
One of these days I'll make 501 posts, and you won't have to look at my silly little diplomat anymore.

I'd love to play multi player, but my single player game keeps crashing to the desktop. I don't really want to start multi player if all i get to do is resign once I crash.

Here's what I did to spice things up:
Do a custom game, turn off the turn limit and make the only victory condition conquest. Use a small map and put as many opponents as it will take. Make them aggressive and switch up their personalities to make it interesting. Set the difficulty to Noble (the idea is to challenge yourself - not get frustrated with impossible difficulty).
It's like a dog-fighting pit, and as soon as someone shows weakness the rest will smell blood and dogpile on, no matter who is friendly with who.
You can try to be nice to the AI at the start, but by the end you will have to club the others to death to survive.
                          There can be only one.

The most fun i ever had was playing civ1 on my amiga
omg! i had to move every single settler myself

i wonder will any civ game live up to the memorys of years gone by ? perhaps im to old now

Civ 4 is a hell of a lot better than civ 3 (which was sht) altho it does suffer from some of the same things,eg the way the maps are generated, however its fun to play and the ai is pretty good tbh (i think it plays quite a lot like a human thats not too eager for war)

Does it become dull rather fast ? not for me so far and the hardest i played is monarch
my biggest complaint is how slow things get in the late game... which perhaps is a problem with my old hardware and not the game

its not perfect by a long way but i think its thumbs up to firaxis on this occasion, but with room for improvement

                            Alpha centauri 2 ???
