Oh and my wife's machine does not do this, even though we are MP'ing... IOW, she does not CTD while I do.
She has a Radeon 9800 card. (Can't recall the rest of the specs atm.)
We need them!! Your anecdote would be a wonderful sign if documented. We need system details (above and beyond mobo, proc, video card, mouse) so that we can solve this issue.
did you install the game differently? have the renderer error on the ATI cards? did you follow 2k's guide to the unpak fix? (to the letter?).
Please post a copy of both machine's dxdiag report (clearly labeled enough to tell them apart).
I'm excited, there seem to be two possible avenues of approach tonight. Akaoz's machines and a machine very nearly identical to mine that has had CTDs fixed (supposedly). I'll keep you guys up to date.
Okay, first things first. I have three machines with Civ4, but only two of them have been used long enough to potentialy generate the late game CTD. None of the machines had any problem running it right off the bat.
My wife has played through the SP game without any CTDs and only I CTD when we play MP.
Now, I'm gonna fire up my wife's PC and do some checking. I'll get back to you ASAP.

Oh, and just to keep spamming: None of the machines have used any "hot fix" or tweak to run.
Edit: One more thing... MP kills my router... Everytime I plat MP (LAN) for any legth of time I loose my connection to the net and my router stops responding. I have to physicaly re-boot it to get it to work again. :-|
Thank you for the info. There were some differences in the ATI driver releases between the computers, but its hard to say if that’s because they are different cards or not.
Also the Sound Blaster driver on your wife's computer is a lot older, but it is also a different card.
In short, nothing jumps out at me.
I flashed my BIOS again, uninstalled Civ 4, rebooted, reinstalled Civ 4, rebooted, loaded defaults in BIOS, set AGP aperture to 256MB in BIOS. Game still crashes to the desktop. I'm not in the mood to experiment with the AGP aperture tonight, so I'm off to bed.
With all luck a patch will be released while I sleep.
Confirmed by me at least. I had frequent reboots and crashes (rarer in early games and smaller games, but very common in late games and large games). I had originally been playing with Catalyst 5.6 (on a 9700 pro if you must know). I upgraded to 5.10 (latest) and had the same issues. Not only...
Maybe old drivers is the key?

Nah, the version differences were down into the build increments.

6.14.0010.6490 (wife)
I'm doubtful that there is enough changes between those builds to cause this problem. Plus the problem occurs with both Omega and ATI drivers, & ATI and Nvidia cards. I doubt a roll back would solve this. Plus the first thing tech support is going to do is ask you to update your drivers.
I know. It seemed odd to me too. ATI must not have changed the driver much at all over that time period. My guess is that the body of the changes were in the catalyst controll center application.
