    Neil81,

I've heard of similar things happening. Take a screen shot in game by pressing print screen ('Prt Scr') if you have that button on your keyboard.

Civ 4 should put them by defualt into:
    My Documents->My Games->Civilization 4->ScreenShots

That being said. I don't think that the behavior you are describing fits with the symptoms addressed by this thread.

    Runmymouth,

Is the crash recoverable, or do you have to reboot? Does the crash go to the desktop? Can you post a screen shot of the 'green bubbles'? What are your system specs?

Hope we can get this sorted out.

    All,

I just finished the Omega driver install. I wouldn't recomend it for anybody not comfortable with driver uninstall-install for unspported software. There were a couple of instances where the install asks technical questions above what the ATI software does.

Also, I sent an email to 2k support. I'm not very hopefull, but it'll be interesting to se what shakes loose.

Well, I just tried the game with the omega drivers and it still crashes to the desktop. With the omega driver the desktop does not get messed up after the crash as before.

The WinXP application event log still has the same two error events after the crash.

        Blecklord,

I'll try but the game seems to be crashing after only 1 turn now.. :P

It does seem to grow worse as you progress in the game. I may try to start a new game.

Oh and I also get those same error messages in the application event log.

PS: Blecklord, what thread did you see my "black shard" problem in? I looked for something similar but couldn't find one.

I finally managed to get the game running long enough to get a screenshot.. Here's the "black shards" although they are gray this time.. It does tend to be pyramid-like when it happens.

I had one CTD. Huge map, fairly large civs. During the automatic update portion of a turn, lots of sound effects, then CTD and lots of display refresh madness.

ATI Radeon X800 Pro (256, PCIe), Athlon 3500+, 1GB memory, XP MCE. Everything is current on patches.

It feels like a driver bug. Nothing any game can do should make the ATI drivers unable to draw the desktop reliably.

I get CTDs and BSOD after playing a few turns. Sometimes as early as in the 1st turn on a saved game. I could also play almost half an hour after startig a new game. I reinstalled Civ4 a couple of times. Did install DirectX from Civ4 discs. Updated my audio (4/13/2005) and video (10/10/2005) drivers and reinstalled Civ4 again. Still getting a mix of CTDs and BSOD.

                NVidia nForce audio

App Event viewer shows the same message mentioned in this thread:

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 7.

(It either ends with event 7 or 6)

A few other interesting things I found in Civ4 logs:

                  seebs,

The display isn't broken, it just hasn't been redrawn; the system is stable and works fine. I'm wondering if this is possibly a VPU recover artifact, not sure.

Edit: Didn't know you were describing your problem. Also didn't know you were running MCE.

                  cucu hara,

Did you find anything in the audio.log? I'm still thinking that the root cause might be the Sounds/CrowdCheer loading. I've never found anything like what you report from the NETWORK log. I'll look and see if I missed something.

                  Neil,

Sorry, I don't remember what thread it was in, but the screen shots look different. The previous one was more point, less triangle. Your thread of on CFC has a reply that blames overheating. I'm skeptical at best. Do you play other 3D games and see similar results?

When I had this, it was doing some fairly strange things on the desktop that corrupted the displays of some windows repeatedly. That's why I rebooted.

I have tried turning the audio acceleration down a notch, and I am installing every last update Windows Update can find. (There are apparently new MCE updates as of very recently.)

Same Problem occuring with Win2K. If I understand that Error-Message (sorry, got only German one) right, there is some DLL or Registry-Entry missing. Or better to say, Firaxis is calling some Routine that does not exist.

Ereignisinformationen: 7.

                      P.S.:

There is something odd in the legacy.log also... looks like that:

[Jason] Using old cut tree: Art/Terrain/Routes/Rivers/River05a.nif_clone

iam playing with a large map and i get also resets (bsod).

so far it seems that putting off AA and AF filtering is making the game run longer without crashes. also ALT-TAB is making my game crashing alot faster.

                        my system:
                        amd2200+
                        1 gig 3200
                        ati9800pro latest drivers
                        audigy latest drivers
installed on other HDD then were windows is on
                        no anti virus program running.

Ditto, BSODs everywhere in full screen on large maps. Graphics corruption like those shards after 2 or 3 turns in windows mode, usually starting after a city building or un resolution pop up.

I just loaded a save game and got a BSOD just for clicking on a settler.

Ati9700Pro latest drivers and directx from the CD on a new install of WinXP pro

I noticed that almost everybody reporting have:
                            1) 1 gig of ram
                            2) playing on a huge map.

Try playing on a smaller map. I don't think 1gig of ram is enough for huge map playing

I have 8gb ram and I get CTD's playing small or higher.

Yes, windowx x64. No, no problems with any other game.

                              Nvidia 6800 gt.

I am getting a bunch of these events:

                                Johncraven,

I have 1GB of RAM and I'm playing on a large map with 6 AI opponents. I would expect that running a map that was too large for your systems physical memory would correctly use virtual memory (that's what its there fore right?). It would slow down like hell but otherwise be ok. Also, the game is still running fast at high detail in the game.

                                chipie,

I haven't noticed those errors in my legacy.log (that doesn't mean they weren't there though). Perhaps this is related to events in the LSystem.log. Maybe LSystem -> L'egacy'System? A good thing for Firaxis to tell us about
