You should pay some more attention to France's reactions when it comes to Lebanon. It's a former colony in which the country still has a major interest, and they don't like Syria all that much.
So the French reaction is normal.

Don't be decieved by the stupid label of "surrendermonkeys" since it belies the fact that France is one of the more warlike countries in the modern world. The surrender in 1941 was a fluke, caused by a demoralised POLITICAL establishement scarred by WW1.

EDIT: I'm terribly sorry for having posted a lame joke and stereotype in a thread meant as lame joke and stereotype. Some thread jackers scanning light mockery for political correctness took offense in it.

Last time I checked France wasn't overrun by Germans in WWI. What was the school you studied history at? I would have to make sure not to send my kids there, if I have any.

French surrender jokes were funny in 41, but only if you were a german, and not among the 27,000 dead, 110,000 wounded, or 18,000 missing...

but that small detail is often left out of these discussions...

Actually, they are still funny, but only if you are 12 years old and have never read a history book in your short life. It also helps to be a rather stupid 12 year old.
