  • OK, that part I definitely understood. What about artillery from the later eras (Industrial/Modern) do they work in the same fashion, or are they different? If different, how so? Thanks in advance !

    • Cannons and Artillery are exactly the same, only stronger of course.

      • Do bombers also work like siege units or is that something else?

        • No, air units work differently.

          • Without a shadow of a doubt spy units ARE invisible units in some form.

"So if you want to nuke a big stack of enemy units next to your own city, you will not be able to do that in Civilization IV. One time I had a spy unit lurking in an enemy city and when I tried to nuke the city, it wouldn't let me -- I had to move the spy out of harm's way first. "

              • Solver, what number does the combat engine use to determine if a seige unit will cause collateral damage? I mean would an howitzer and a catapult both have the same chance of inflicting collateral damage on a stack or do they have different chances?

                Comment

                • An attacking siege unit will always inflict collateral damage. The difference lays in the amount of units that the collateral damage is done to, and how big the damage is. Respectively, a Cannon would do more collateral damage to a stack than a Catapult would.

                  • So according to that tell me if this example is right (i'm just making up these numbers). A catapult always does 6 collateral damage and a cannon always does 12 collateral dammage. So if a catapult attacks a size 6 stack it inflicts 1 damage on each unit, and if a cannon attacks a size 2 stack it inflicts 6 damage on each unit. Then after inflicting collateral damage they engage in combat like normal. Is that right, or am i missing something?

                    • The amount of collateral damage is not fixed. It depends on the siege unit, but also on the defending unit. A Catapult, strength 5, attacking a stack of all Axemen (5, too) will do more damage to them then attacking a stack of all Macemen (8).

Other than that, yes - the siege unit inflicts collateral damage, and then engages in combat like normal with the top unit in the stack.

                        • So would a catapult do more collateral damage in general on a stack of 2 macemen (8), or 4 axemen (5)?

BTW thanks for all of your patient question answering solver...

oh a side note this is my 3000th post so i'm an emperor now... who hoo!

                          • It would do some damage to 2 macemen and some to 4 axemen, but more to the axemen definitely! Now, if you had a stack of 4 axemen and 4 macemen, then some of these units may even go unscratched, a Catapult wouldn't damage them all.

                            • Is "lethal bombard" in the game? I.e., can units be killed by collateral damage, or only "red-lined" (or whatever the CIV term for "almost killed" will end up being)?

                              • Thankfully (to me) no lethal bombardment, although units can become very weak through collateral damage. I didn't like the Civ3 too-easy bombardment.
