Freddz would be a PERFECT candidate to carry the negativity torch! And it's not that I think the torch should be forgotten or anything...it's just that my arm is tired holding it up now...and it's hard to hold the torch and play Civ 4 at the same time.

Thank you. I would be honoured.
But unfortunately, I find myself much too positive towards this game and it is too hard to hide.
Let us just say that the torch may be lit again after we play CIV 4 for a while and discover what we feel about it, although I will certainly not strive at it, and I doubt I will be aggressive towards the game as a whole. But towards a feature or two perhaps...

And besides, yin, I don't have your vocabulary or sharpness of speech. That's just a matter of fact. And I have to concentrate a whole lot to write decently and not to get too tedious. BUT I will improve!
With the Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage lying beside me nowadays I am sure I will succed! (nudge nudge)Last edited by Freddz; October 23, 2005, 16:34.

Freddz: You are a credit to all of us out there with an innate wariness of The Corporate Machine! (O.K., well of shoddy treatment of paying customers in general, but saying it the other way sounds so much grander.) I agree, of course, that only playing Civ for many months, watching the patch process, etc., will truly tell the story. I am, however, resigned to the fact that the AI probably is open to many of the usual tricks, but I have seen what modders can do and am...dare I say it...hopeful. It's odd just to type that!

LOL! Well, I hereby pass the negativity torch to Ralph, then.
...til then, you have to stand firm on your negativity.

By the way, Sir Ralph: Would you like to be part of the team that judges whether or not I eat cardboard? Hex thinks you'd be good, and that's all the vouching I need (I think you'd be good, too, by the way).I've been on these boards for a long time and I still don't know what to think when it comes to you -- FrantzX, December 21, 2001

Oh come on, Sir Ralph would be a terrible torch holder . He is only negative about 1 or 2 trivial little things, from what I have seen-we need someone who TRULY hates the game. I would like to nominate hclass from the Civfanatics as the new torch holder, for he is a force for pure negativity that would have even put Yin at his height to shame-largely because his negativity is based on no information and is not subject to change regardless of the evidence provided to him !

Anyway, I share your hope! But I may be surprised to find myself very annoyed at something. We will see. The game will arrive to me around the 1st (+2days) according to ebgames.Last edited by Freddz; October 24, 2005, 09:08.

Well, great beta-testers from Apo-land AND Civfanatics-land, and that is just the ones we KNOW about. Have to say that, what gives me hope for the AI having a much longer shelf-life this time out is that they have based it on long observations of behaviour exhibited between humans in the MP they built-from the ground up. This is probably a FAR better way to build an AI, as you can make it respond appropriately to percieved human 'exploits' much better.
Eventually people will be able to work around even this but, as long as Firaxis and fan-based AI's continue to be released on a frequent enough basis, then I don't think the AI component of the game will truly get stale.

I told the same to Hex, with whom I changed PMs. He replied, that you would see it as good fun, and if that is really the case, you can count on me. But keep in mind, that living in Europe I'll get the game 2 weeks later than you, and probably I need a bit time, since these tests demand some care. So if you're out for a quicker judgement (may be because that game box looks too appetizing ), you'll probably be better off looking for somebody else.
