And when you saw the culture advisor in Civ2, did you write a letter to your Congressman?

I'm curious to hear the reasons people have for voting "Completely disappoints." People are, of course, entitled to their opinions, but I haven't seen anyone give an adequate explanation of their reasons. Even Yin admits that all hope is not lost

even a serious, reality-based game does not have to exclude homour. just like in real-life, some jokes cannot harm (except maybe some easily offended people).

and serious gaming? well... gaming is playing? and playing is pretty much the thing which kids do. we just use more sophisticated games for the same purpose: entertainment...

Based on the exact wording of the options, it would be a clear vote #1. It seemingly exceeds all expectations, there is no doubt, and I can only hope, that it will be exactly how it seems now.

However, I have not forgotten Conquests, which also seemed to be absolutely awesome (in Civ3 terms) pre-release.

Weighting and evaluating these two mixed feelings one against other, my final vote is #2.

The weeks prior to the release of Conquests a lot of people had low expectations. We even had the "Pessimistic apolyton club" (formed by yin btw )

The current atmosphere and expection of cIV cannot be compared to the way poly expected cIIIv to be.

BTW, I liked civ3, thought I had to share that again

                MarkG:

When the game is released, do what Black and White 2 did, open two thread stickies in Civ4 General, one that says "Things about Civ4 you hate" and the other "Things about Civ4 you like".

Only people who have played the game can post.

It's quite a good way to quickly find out the +'s and -'s of the game. This is also good for Firaxis. (well, hopefully the "Things you like" thread is bigger than the "Things you don't like" thread.

                I voted No. 2 btw.

Lets see how many patches they need.

You're very unlikely to see a game that doesn't have at least one patch these days. It's not necessarily the fault of the developers either. There are just so many possible combinations of hardware/software that there's no way they could predict every possible problem. It's when I don't see a patch that I'll be worried.

Of course it's impossible to make a game that works on all systems, but often patches fixes bugs that are not HW releated

The problem I see with the patching system can be the following:

Take 2 contracts with Firaxis to develop the game and to give a set number of patches post release. Usually this number is set at 2. Therefore, if something is clearly broken in the game or a promised feature set simply is missing, it becomes a judgement call as to whether or not the publisher considers this fix as 1 of the 2 contracted patches.

If so, then half of our support has gone simply to fixing something that should have been fixed "on the house." Ultimately I don't mind if *new* features, etc., come in the X-pack. This only makes financial sense. But using one of the 2-3 official patches for a quick fix of something broken out of the box is infuriating.

Hopefully Take 2 knows better than to do that! Also in our favor, it seems, is that Firaxis has had this game in testing for a good, long time. So hopefully interceptors intercept, Yang doesn't have infinite range missles, etc.

I think you mean expansion packs.

Isn't it basicly the same thing, except that you have to pay for those patches XPacks? A lot of companies seems to think so at least

yin24, interesting... i read exactly the same information in a completely different forum. one for the game UFO:Aftermath. one of the lead developers of cenega (czech republic) said about their deal regarding two patches... no matter how many bugs are fixed within them... contractual BS

regarding civ4, there's always (at least) one bugfix patch and the SDK will probably be a second one (i would not be surprised if it were nearly ready anyhow )
