  • What would blow your mind

We already know a lot about Civ IV, and now some threads are going crazy with assumptions and predictions that we aren't 100% sure about.

So I thought it might be fun to really embrace that ignorance.

Come up with pretend announcement that would spawn the most "Strategy Revision" and discussion before the game hits the stores. For extra fun the announcements should be a little believable, so if they were in a preview we might think, "What has Firaxis done?" but not think, "What is this reviewwer on?"

    My attempts:

    1:
A reviewer lets it slip that he was surprised the first time he conquered an enemy wonder to discover that its effects do not carry over to the conquering Civ. Soren announces that the "Wonder Benefit for Building Civ Only" was a move to balance the AI against militaristic players who only attack AI's for the wonders. "Taking a wonder city from another player is still a great way to hurt them, but the balance is no longer so clear cut because it doesn't help the aggressor quite as much. We've been playing like this for two years now and it's much more fun and challenging," Soren adds.

    2:
Workers "die." Firaxis releases a screenshot with a popup window saying, "Sire, six of our workers have been caring for our land for many years now, and we can't count on them living much longer. It may be time now to start looking for more."

    3:
A video clip of gameplay shows a Roman unit being marched into the Mali capitol. At this point the Mali civ is seen to split into two different civs, and the new one is christined "England."

    4:
Negotiations take place over several turns. It turns out that the AI, or another player, cannot accept your proposal in diplomacy during your turn, or make counter offers. This brings all diplomacy to the same PBEM style that many are used to, and adds a touch of excitement to the process. So says Sid.

The prize for best fake announcement goes to whoever writes the one that is brought up in another thread in the week before release as actual fact.

Can you give a quote to back this up?

Civ 4 is really an FPS with featuring bi-lateral diffusing filtering pixellating shadowed pre-rendered graphic objects at a resolution of 3800 X 2657. Anyone without a Quad 128-bit CPU array can expect a frame rate of about 1.3

The initial release of Civ 4 on 10/25/05 is only going to be for the Nintendo Gamecube. A port for PS2, X box, Xbox 360 and PS3, PSP's and PC's is expected in late 2006. All fifteen registered owners of Gamecubes are reported as "bummed" that Mario and Luigi are not slated to be the playable Roman emperors.

With a downloadable content mod known as "hot Nubian coffee" advanced users of CIV 4 will be able to unlock "added content" of Catherine the Great and Shaka Zulu secretly meeting in an "adult setting." Congressional hearings decrying this threat to public morality are scheduled to begin the day after Civ's initial Gamecube release.

            No, I cannot.

                * Multi-player will be part of an expansion and not of the vanilla game.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

You can unlock otherwise hidden extra civs by completing the complementary scenarios, or by winning each of the victory conditions.

                    * Winning a diplomatic victory (in the Pitboss) will activate a personal message from Sid Meier to the first player to achieve this. That's why its only in that MP server, it can check achievements.

                    * Culture victory and Spaceship victory does the same, but then from respectively Jeff Briggs and Lead Programmer Soren.

For the first few weeks after release, all betatesters will be forced to play on an other server because it would be unfair to have players with 1-year experience against complete newbies. Game Magazine reviewers will get a seperate server too, because it's unfair to them to let them play against normal (apolyton) players.

                        That is scarey.

Leaders for the 2 missing trait combos will be released free of charge in a patch 6 months after release. The 2 leaders will be chosen based on a vote of the fans.
