You can also sell slave workers, but only if you haven't banned slavery by civics.
Great people of different country can be payed (a diplomatic/spy action) to join your nation. In Renaissance/Golden ages you'll have a greater probability of success into this action. The Great People can be held in prison if catched in between of the border passing.
