They could use placeholder art for that.

actually a civ2 or 1 graphics style mod would rock...somehow that looks better than cIV
(someone on the cIV graphics team just died reading this)if you want to stop terrorism; stop participating in it
''Oh,Commissar,if we could put the potatoes in one pile, they would reach the foot of God''.But,replied the commissar,''This is the Soviet Union. There is no God''.''Thats all right'' said the worker,''There are no potatoes''

I'm not so sure I agree though...Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.-Isaiah 41:10
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made - Psalms 139.14a

Perfect graphics .
I think a black and white graphich, once you chose a good pattern, is good enough for the pure player.
But that's only for newbies coming from RTS game: Real man (and real Ladies) only play as chess master, memorizing game graphic from start and playing it blinded all the game.
IIRC it was a trick teached to prussian officer in school of war, during late XIX century."We are reducing all the complexity of billions of people over 6000 years into a Civ box. Let me say: That's not only a PkZip effort....it's a real 'picture to Jpeg heavy loss in translation' kind of thing."

OK, I may be not hardcore enough for not wanting text-mode games that only use glyphs .
Seriously, though, Civ1 is, in a way, my definition of perfect graphics for a strategy game. Very easy to overview a sizeable area, everything is very easy to tell apart, and you instantly know what tiles are what and contain what, what and where are the units on the map, etc. Functionality wise, it's perfect indeed.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

Clarity of information by simple graphics is good!
OTOH, pretty but vague graphics can lead to mistaken values. Such mistakes can lead to greater realism! For the player taking the role-playing perspective, this is also good.
That's the POV I like to take.
Not so good perhaps, for someone that is just "playing the game" or prioritizing a high score.

You want perfect map, and you have a clear idea of the result: you can travel all the globe on instrument and just following good enough map. Did you end enjoying the voyage, without actually using any window on the real world?
Well, I hope so for you, but I'm sure that's not the cup of tea of everyone else.
I also remember that original Civ had quite limited different resources and units to manage with simple graphics, while Civ IV seem a bit more complex.
I'm thinking right now that we surely can write any Shakespeare or (put your favourite author here) tragedy using morse code. The message will be clear and complete: I'm not sure about the enjoynment
Ok, if not for the performance hit, it should be good to have available a button to change graphic on a touch, like we can with that model Earth globe for the desktop: with the light turned off we can see the geographic world, while lightening it politics border show up and countries are coloured on the surface of the globe.

Trees on mountains, especially on lower elevations.
Some random trees on plains and grasslands.Yes, let's be optimistic until we have reason to be otherwise...No, let's be pessimistic until we are forced to do otherwise...Maybe, let's be balanced until we are convinced to do otherwise. -- DrSpike, Skanky Burns, Shogun Gunner
