I would like forests where trees are more proportional to city buildings. Almost (gasp!) Civ3-ish, where a single tree is not bigger than 1 or 2 small buildings, and may be smaller -- not all trees are huge oaks (in fact, most aren't).

In addition to different forest types (evergreen and not), there might also be solid, dense forests and less dense forest, in addition to forests which are "clumpy" with open spaces intermixed (I'm referring to within a single tile) where movement might not be restricted, but may still offer defense advantages.

With the graphics available, the game may be moddable to add more forest types with different affects.

    Rambling done,
    Thanx

Much smaller... and closer together. My problem with the graphics is that they don't properly portray the distances and scale they are supposed to represent. I understand that the graphics can not perfectly represent the distances involved (nor should they)... but the trees really break the illusion for me. I want to feel and perceive the fact that I'm playing across vast continents... I'm hardly going to feel like an emperor when the size of the forests compared to the terrain makes me feel like I'm the mayor of a municipality

        What he said.

Also, the city improvements shouldn't be smaller than the houses. And the wonders should literally tower over them.

My oath! Look at the size of the coliseums for a perfect example the problem.

I think what he's saying, and I agree with him, is that we can't see the forest for the trees.

I agree with just about everything and he's right, the trees are the real killer right now. What they've done by putting all those details on the main map now is throw off any sense of scale the might have been. So now what used to look likea n open plain suddenly, has these large houses and things on it.. And if you see that next to a "forest tile" which looks more like a "grove of trees" tile your sense of perspective is thrown off. Then two tiles over is something representing a MOUNTAIN, which appears to be about three times taller than a tree. Strange, and detracting.

i agree about the trees: way too big. also they should be closer together. units and city size is fine, everyone knows it's just symbolic representation, has to be big so one can see it, but nature needs to be more realistic (smaller!), to give the impression of a huge land. suggestion: maybe totally replace single-tree forest concept with one-green-mass forest block concept.

              some other suggestions:

              -roads a little smaller (narrower)
-grassland a little more saturated green
              -forests a little darker green

              concerning water:

-ocean surface could be a darker blue. most water surfaces look more black than blue from far above (not all oceans are clear, calm and blue like the caribbean sea in "pirates")
              -water should be less transparent
-beaches should be a little narrower

beaches look too caribean to me. they should be:

                - more narrow
                - darker, different texture alltogether (some stones, gravel, dirt)
                - some cliffs, at least some large rocks
                - more clear cut, less frayed (smaller and fewer sand banks)

I noticed that the roads look much better on the darker grass tiles. Maybe the roads would look better if they were little lighter, for the lighter grasslands.

The terrain looks quite featureless without human improvements unfortunately. Civ2 and CTP terrain was much more satisfying... but replicating their detail in 3d graphics would perhaps place too much strain on less advanced video cards.

Well, but what about all those new things to build that we don't have graphics for then?
