  • Expansion Packs

Okay, so I know the game hasn't come out yet, but expansion packs with Civ are inevitable.

So how many should there be? What new features and civs should be in them?

I'd like to see 8 new civs like last time. Perhaps this list:

    Incas
    Ottoman Turks
    Assyrians
    Mayans
    Koreans
    Carthaginians
    and, oh I don't know...
    Vikings
    and Celts?

Those last two were always pushing it a little bit. They provided some diversity, but the Celts. for one. never had an organized nation/empire, and the Vikings, despite their culutral achievements and economic trade were bloodthirsty raiders. But having these two is better than having the Portuguese or the Dutch.

Korea is a must! I had a *HUGE* thread about this on Poly some years ago but can't seem to find it. First, I speak Korean and can't wait to hear the units speaking it. Second (more importantly, obviously) the Korean market is a big one (well, less so for TBS games)...rabid computer game players over there.

I found a Korean Civ3 forum with over 14,000 members. I'd say that warrants being included (if you assume Firaxis are trying to please large markets by including their nation or race).

I'll tell you what, the Korean market is sure larger than the Malinese one is.

With the modding capability that is supposed to be available to us through the SDK, we may have all of these extra civs available to use before Firaxis is able to release an expansion pack.

Just think of it, Firaxis goes to release an expansion pack, and everyone who looks at it says, "but we already have those civs in the game!"

Korea is a must, and it will be implemented in the first expansion pack. I'm actually surprised that it doesn't belong to the vanilla game: I bet the Korean market for Civ is larger than the Japanese one.

Well, the Ottomans were modded way before Play the World came out, but Firaxis' work was superior to the modders' (original leaderheads instead of ones made by poser, complete diplomatic text, the added bonus of being the standard).

I don't think Civ4 will be any different to Civ3 in that regard.

                      Reindeer Rider, of course.

Who would the Viking leader be, though? Whatever historical persona they wind up choosing for the Vikings would be a bit of a stretch, I think.

No, he was just an explorer.

Possibilities include Cnut, Ragnar Lodbrok, Erik Bloodaxe (just for the cool name), Gustavus Adolphus, and innumerable bloodthirsty pillagers named Sven, Olaf or Haakon.

As for the Vikings, they represent a side to civilization (real one...not the game) that isn't often portrayed. I'd like to see them included

It's not like you'll play the game anyway...
