  • 19 Tile improvements?

From the July 8th Video interview with Lead Producer Jesse Smith

[quote]Smith says that he believes those who play CivIV and have played earlier titles will find that exploration is a lot more interesting now for you no longer know at the outset where you are located relatively in the world around you. Nineteen tile improvements then come in handy.

    Hmm, lets see...
    1. Irrigation
    2. Farmland
    3. Roads
    4. Railroads
    5. Airport
    6. Fortress
    7. Mining

We can pretty much assume that these are in, but what else?

perhaps now should be a good time to point out that "The Civ4 List" covered this, and proposed something like 50 new terrain improvements

50 would be probably a bit too much for most players, though .

but there is a good possibility that the majority of the 19 improvements come out of the list.

Yes, if only because it would be hard to think of many extra ones that are reasonable for the game and are not on the list.

you got 1 tile improvement for each resource. So thats where that # comes from.

I'd assume some resources would share an improvement (like iron & coal), but if most have unique improvements, then it would explain the big number.

Iron, coal, gold, copper many resources are mineable. I really doubt 1 per resource. Maybe some improvements that are only used for resources, but not 1 per resource.

The number of resources far exceeds 19. Given that we surely have roads, farms, mines and railroads, it's down to a few resource specific improvements, if there are such.

Some resources will share improvements for extracting, while others will have their own unique improvement.

IIRC they've mentioned vinyards or a winery of some sort.

If you take a page out of SMAC we might be able to raise/lower the terrain. Perhaps there will be tiles that boost culture or religion? Like a missionary outpost or something.

There's no elevation in cIV. And I don't see how a religion improvement would work... but a cultural improvement, maybe.

Windmills have been mentioned in one of the previews and I have seen a screenie of one somewhere....

...but most of all, I hope they implemented the tile improvement of "suburb".

If they did, my mark upon civ would have taken place.

As long as there are updates to improvements, that could account for a few. 3 types of mines and irrigation would be need at least.

Windmills require hills, Fisheries are obviously built on Coastal Squares (though whether a fish resource is needed, I am not sure), same with an offshore platform. Vinyards requires the grape resource, and I have seen Pens for animal resources such as pigs, Cattle, Sheep and horses. Plus I am sure we will have the standard mines, farms, outposts, airbases and forts-so thats 10 just for starters.
                            Anyone think of any others?
