    Vince:

    Good to hear from you again.

    Yes .... I have also learned that it is necessary to have access to a really powerful system in order to be able to create big maps. Of course, playing them (without massive delays between turns) is yet another matter ....

      I wonder if its possible to have the map on a really good server and use it in a massive multiplayer online game.

        This would be a truly fascinating idea !!

        In addition, for CIV, a really big and detailed World Map (with say 64 or even 128 players) might just enable some really interesting diplomacy, etc. Perhaps the United Nations Wonder might finally mean something ....

        Imho, this would constitute the next evolution for the Civ franchise. However, I would still love to be able to play this MMO-type map as a single player experience.

            Trip Shafer has been known to frequent these forums at times.

            Hopefully he might see this idea and take it further.

              @Adagio:

              No, I haven't tried loading it. I estimated the 1600x1600 map needed 10 GB of RAM.

              @Vince278:
              I used my own Map Generator (see signature), although the normal version limits size to 400x400.

              Check out my Atlas Map Generator

                  You mean you don't even have 10 GB ram in your computer?

                  This space is empty... or is it?

                    I wonder if you can get USB RAM?

                        When the game first came out I was struggling to play the game with even a standard sized map, Huge maps just brought my system to a jerky stuttering halt with hard resets very common.

                        The first patch didnt do much to help that but the latest patch along with my removal of a video card that I had nothing but problems with has enabled me to play huge maps with 11 civs.

                        I still get occasional crashes but these are CTD's and not hard resets like I was getting before. The funny thing is it runs very well and the crashes seem to be random but as I can get in a couple of hours play inbetween them I guess I can put up with it (that and the fact that I have it autosaving every turn).

                        The interesting thing is I only have 512Mb or RAM. It does slow down a little but nowhere near as bad as it did before 1.52.

                        My system is :

                        AMD Athlon XP 1800+ (1.5Ghz)
                        512 MB RAM
                        ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256 Mb (a sidegrade from fx5700 nvidia - which I had nothing but problems with)
                        Onboard sound (the amazing AC97 !! )

                        Seeing as before I couldnt even play any map larger than standard I am quite happy.

                        My next upgrade will be more RAM tho

                          My specs are just below yours and I can't even play Large maps without a system crash occcasionaly. So I guess I'm not to far off. I was planning on upgrading this summer so it looks like I don't have to go up by much.

                          Athlon XP 1700+ (1.42Ghz)
                          1 GIG RAM
                          Radeon 9550 128 Mb

                            I went in and edited it to 45X28 which is 1260, very close to double the size of the Huge. If your specs are something around 4400+, 7800GT, 2GB DDR-400 then try those dimensions.

I can't even play on Large without a good chance my computer will crash. And it's not because of overheating, it just can't handle the calculations that are involved with something as simple as moving a unit from A to B.
                              It's not the RAM. I can play Huge (the Earth scenario) maps on my computer. It gets EXTREMELY slow later, frequently 30 or more seconds for AI turns, but there's no loss of stability.

                              I do this with 768MB of RAM and an Athlon XP 3000+ that runs at about 2.2 Ghz. Have a Radeon 9600 video card though that won't make much difference.

                                It does though, having Huge maps increases the load on your video card. I just upgraded my system to a AMD 3500+ and added another 512 meg RAM, yet my video card still has a hard time redrawing the map when I select the grid option. And having the graphics turned up high causes my scrolling to slow down. I'm using a Radeon 9550, which isn't much different from yours.
