An idea about the mod. It would be rad if you could change the marathon settings to alter the amount of culture you need for a city's influence area to expand. Right now in marathon its 30 pts for the first expansion. I'd like it back to ten if possible.

and last but not least, say I start a game tonight with this sweet program, will the alterations/modifications be saved within the game file save or do I need to mimic them if I get out of this mode and return a few days later to continue the game?

PBEM are considered MP. The succession games, I think, are standard SP games, but you might want to double-check that with whomever originated the gamesave.

This program creates a new version of the XML file where all these values are stored...
      \Sid Meier's Civilization4\Assets\XML\GameInfo\CIV4GameSpeedInf o.xml

And it creates a backup of the original file calles it GameSpeedBackup (put in the same location).

So, once you run the program and change the settings, any SP game (even one already started) will use these new settings, as cIV reloads the xml files everytime you start up cIV.

This means that your succession games will likely be affected. You have a few options:
      1) Just be very careful about resetting the values to default whenever you want to play a succession game

      - or -

      2)
      a) Copy the altered CIV4GameSpeedInfo.xml into the custom files location...
      C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\CustomAssets\xml\gameinfo

      b) Restore the settings to default (so that the default values are contained in the main directory tree)

      c) If you want to play a modified game, just start up cIV as normal and it will load the file from the customized tree. If you want to play a succession game, rename or move the customized file, so that cIV will load the default CIV4GameSpeedInfo file.

This is the method I use (of course I play around with lots of other bits as well). To facilitate switching files in and out I have placed shortcuts to the Main xml directory and the Custom xml directory on my desktop.

      - or-

      3) (I have not tried this personally, as my HD is getting a bit full) Create two installs of the game, one where you leave everyting as default and one where you keep all your mods and things. Then just create two desktop shortcuts called Vanilla Civ and Modded Civ.

      Hope that helps!

I believe that is just the Culture setting. So put that one back down to 100 for Marathon.

I reckon changes affect new games and not saved ones?

All you have to do is placing GameSpeedTuner.jar and the backup file in the folder Assets\XML\GameInfo
Double click GameSpeedTuner.jar to start the program.

**NOTE**: If this brings up winRAR, you need to start the program by pressing the right mouse button on GameSpeedTuner.jar, select 'Open with' and choose 'Java(TM) 2 Platform..."

I have Java 1.5.0.10 but it doesn't appear in my Program list in the start menu. I can click down to the bin directory under Programs\Java and it gives me a list of ca. 10 exe files. Which one do I pick? jawaws.exe has a non-default icon, but won't load your program, giving this error: The following required field is missing from the launch file: jnlp
Actually, the jnlp is enclosed in < > but I can't get that to show up here.

                    @Urban Ranger:
                    I don't believe so. I didn't have to.

                    @RO:
The file you need is javaw.exe. At least that does the trick for me.

                        Gramps

One other thought, it would be great if someone could do what was done here, but expand a little like allow "X" settlers, "X" gold, "X" units and so forth

                        Ok

I gotta learn Python & more XML,

anyone know exactly what SDK will do?

What happens when you double click the .jar file?

It used to open with WinAce. Now, I set it up to open with jawaw.exe, giving me the error I listed above.

It's strange that Java doesn't appear in my Start > Programs list. But I can find it in C:\Programs. I just ran an update to jre1.5.0_06 but that doesn't appear to help. Maybe I need to restart (gotta go to work now). Or maybe I need to uninstall and reinstall. I think I got it with Opera originally.
                              Enjoy,

                              Robert

That's because it is not a program you can run, but it contains a bunch of things, one of which is a runtime environment that can use to execute compiled Java programs (bytecode).

I reckon the best approach is to deinstall it first, then reinstall the newest update.
