And does anyone really worship tennis or volleyball?
I don't think any sport besides football is worshipped like a religion (esp. in Latin and South European countries), the other ones are just very popular sports world-wide.
Athletics: Activities, such as sports, exercises, and games, that require physical skill and stamina.
Sports: Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
Athletics encompasses all sports as well as exercise. Sports are specific athletic activity.

While I can tell you that American football, baseball, and NASCAR are all religions in the US. You named a bunch of sports that no one cares a whole lot about, asleepatthewheel named sports that are followed fanatically here in the US.

That's one meaning, but it's also a specific sport in itself (or rather a branch of sports): running, high/long/pole jumping, javelin/discus throwing, hurdles, etc.

I can assure you all sports I listed have fanatical followings in large parts of the world (except athletics maybe, but that has a huge historic significance). But nothing remotely compares to football, that includes American sports.

In the US that would be referred to as "track and field".
Hmm, well the international organisation behind the sport is called IAAF with the second A standing for Athletics, and althetics is the word for it in British, Dutch, German and French at least, so that's an American thing then...

You don't know how Indians workship cricket , then ?
Yes, but noone is stupid enough - nope, not the English - to pretend that cricket is a sport.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus
I always thought that India and Pakistan were the countries who worship hockey. At least it are the only countries there natives would mention dutch hockeyplayers to me by name. In other countries they would name football players.
Cricket I never understood, but it seems very popular in the British world.
