Back in my day... both parents worked full time and kids were a lot more autonomous.

Now parents are super protective and don't let kids do anything alone. Most often the explanation is that life in general is more dangerous now than it used to be in socialist Bulgaria in the 80s. Especially traffic. I don't really buy it. (although traffic is indeed a lot worse)

Maybe the fact that there are a lot of parents with a single child only causes some this. When you have your first child you stress a lot about every little thing and you become super protective. Also there are fewer kids as whole. When you know that there is a large group of kids including older siblings that can take care of each other you will be more relaxed and not be obsessed about every little thing.
Also social media and media in general today brings instantly to your attention every single horror story in the country. This creates a biased view of how safe/dangerous it is for the kids. (people are really bad at counting)
