    The Olympics

    What no thread already?

So who likes watching the Olympics when they're on? Who's going? Who's taking part?

It's only 8 days before Cardiff literally kicks off the games with the opening event of women's football between Team GB and New Zealand, followed by Cameroon Vs Brazil, and I'll be there!

Instant communications has really changed how much interest I have in watching the Olympics.
When I was young, everyone tried to keep it a secret who won so you didn't really know until you watched it.
These days, most of the broadcasts are shown taped with the winner already made aware to most of the those watching due to everyone being connected.
It takes a lot of drama out of the viewing.
At least this year with it over the pond, there will be some opportunity to watch some of the events live.

My wife and I don't make it a priority to watch but I'm sure we'll get caught up in the excitement.
And it is considerably better than most of the other reality type shows that permeate the Summer broadcast schedule.
The OT at APOLYTON is like watching the Special Olympics. Certain people try so hard to debate despite their handicaps.
    Baron O RIP.

I believe they are making every event available live this year, via either broadcast or live stream.

I could be wrong; haven't paid much attention.

You are correct.. That is the new NBC/Comcast strategy. Every event will be covered live in "some" fashion. They are hoping that the live web feeds will generate a strong "word of mouth" campaign to get people to watch the TV coverage. Only time will tell if that is a "good" strategy

Like usual I doubt I'll be watching any of the Olympics this year. I might venture over to Wikipedia once or twice to double check that the US is kicking ass in the medal count, but that's it.

Since we're 5-8 hours behind I'm sure almost all of the prime time NBC broadcasts will be taped production pieces. So unless you have your head buried in the sand, most will know the outcome already.
Hopefully on the weekends we can catch some live stuff in the afternoons.

Women's football to kick off (pun intended!) the Olympics tomorrow in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff!

Team GB Vs New Zealand, followed by Cameroon Vs Brazil.

Cardiff is looking great with all the flags and the buzz around the place! I've got my Olympic accreditation sorted so I'll be attending 9 of the 11 matches that are being held here in an official capacity - looking forward to it!

Saw an awesome mens football game today, Brazil Vs Egypt: Brazil raced to a 3-0 lead by about the 30th minute and then Egypt pegged them back to 3-2 with about 20 minutes to go! Despite there only being about 26,000 spectators, the atmosphere was absolutely electric with a real carnival spirit on the streets afterwards!

I enjoyed my second favorite team, Honduras, play a 2-2 tie with Morroco. I did two mission trips to Honduras, sentimental value cheering them on

I also watched Spain not appreciate being handled by Japan, great game!

The Olympics are promoting international cooperation, just not the type you might think.

The off-color snickering has only intensified since American soccer goalkeeper Hope Solo gave an interview about sex in the Olympic village (the CliffsNotes version: Whoa, there's a lot!) and others have noted that 100,000 condoms, or nearly 10 for every athlete scheduled to compete, will be made available.

At first its easy, then the Female Flagcarriers sabotage it by not waving their Flag; then all Hope is lost.

Beach volleyball just isn't the same with the more modest outfits.

And the NBC coverage here is just awful. I avoided all the sports and news sites yesterday so I could watch the swimming without knowing who won. So right before the segment where Missy Franklin was to complete the quick turnaround for the 100 meter backstroke, they air a promo for their morning show where they announce the guest will be GOLD WINNING Missy Franklin. Un****ing believable.

I agree. I was watching one of the news shows the other day and they told you to close your eyes if you did not want to see the results. They did nothing verbally and then a woman newscaster comes on and basically gives away the information. How stupid can you be? The newsman had just made sure you could miss it. Where was she when that happened? "Listening is a skill".

This is what happens when you tape delay sports. TV networks have lost their expertise of doing tape delay of things that people care about. Bowling, poker and bike racing don't count because no one cares.
