CanPol: Leader of the Opposition, Jack Layton, has died

Used to see him semi-regularly back when I went to a gym in downtown Toronto. He was friendly enough, even if he did have a penchant for walking around naked and talking politics. He was certainly a character.

He has just come off an incredible election result that was largely built on his personality.

RIP.

NDP Leader Jack Layton has died, his family said in a statement today.

Mr. Layton's wife, Olivia Chow and his children Michael and Sarah, said Mr. Layton passed away at 4:45 am today.

"He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones," the statement read.

It was just four weeks ago he "temporarily" stepped down from leading the party to fight off this new, 2nd form of cancer. He had almost finished beating prostate cancer when this hit him.

That's the reaction that he got from where I am. Fear. No, Mr. Layton is not well-liked. Sure, by some he is but not by all. So please do not claim to speak for all Canadians as you did previously. Speak for yourself.
